Presentation transcript:

These the ideas the Canterbury Primary Principals Association had been developing in the hope of rebuilding Christchurch’s education system into something really special. Instead they’re to get charter schools Revolution of Ideas CPPA

Key themes Taking a shared ownership of all Christchurch students Increased collaboration across schools and across sectors Doing things differently from next year Keeping the bigger vision in mind as well as day to day operational Equity, diversity, inclusiveness need to underpin decision making

Education as part of rebuild How high a priority is this? How can we be involved in the process? Role of learners? Wider consultation with school communities? Linking with other aspects, esp infrastructure rebuild A focus on the vision of the NZC

Hubs Different sectors of schools on same site - ECE, primary, secondary, links to tertiary Several schools of same type on same site Hubs based on strengths/expertise i.e. arts, science Sharing teacher expertise across schools Virtual hubs Shared common resources, not just physical resources Individual learning pathways across and outside of schools

Technology Better use of technology in a future focused way Increased use of ICT Remote learning Use for links between home and school, school and community, school and school

Ministry and community support Fear that change will be rejected/opposed Funding innovative projects Permission from MoE to try new things Parents and community need to support innovation - how to build this? Ongoing issues relating to decile funding, zoning, competition between schools, ERO reporting, national standards, school governance, shared governance, employment relationships, etc etc

Ideas Transport - bus routes - free bus services - orbiter bus Teachers working in different ways -moving between schools -Working in teams -Across age levels

Ideas Coordinator role -making community school links -Cross school links -Hub links -Dedicated resource to drive it Personalising learning -different pathways - don’t have to be at same place, same time as peer group - learner centred approach - a chance to really do it

Ideas Changes to school timetable - e.g 51 weeks a year, half day periods, different start and finish times Community links - community mentors - Involvement of members of the community who are not teachers to be involved e.g. local artists, tertiary students

Observations moving forward Establish an ongoing process to develop ideas further Free up time and thinking space Make sure you are part of CERA education strategy - can you run it? Apply for resources collectively Need for special resource allocation
