Insidiou s Character types Young child sleeping (Victim) The fact that the child is sleeping adds to his vulnerability, as he has no sense of what’s happening in the current situation.

Demon (antagonist) The ‘demon witch’ being is represented as being very old which enhances its horrifying characteristics. The fact that light usually shines could signify death, also the use of the candle on the face creates a sense of horror.

Camerawork High angle shot and a P.O.V shot The scene begins with the camera looking down at a young boy sleeping, this creates a sense of something looking down upon the vulnerable boy. Establishing/panoramic shot The use of the establishing shot creates a visual understanding of the atmosphere for the audience, as it gives a wide view of each room. Longshot Longshots are used throughout the opening title sequence as they are used to show where the narrative is taking place by giving a sense of the rooms and characters. Mid shot A mid shot is used when the camera gradually moves nearer to the demon, showing its chest upwards. Close up The use of a close up here shows that the demon like being is wearing a veil, meaning it is a woman. Close ups are also used to create a sense of claustrophobia which makes the audience feel unsettled and on the edge of their seats.

Freeze frame This happens in the opening credits as there are still drawn images of different scenes of the ‘haunted house’, with the writing fading in and out, like ghosts.

Sound Non-Diegetic sounds (Classical music)  This adds to the suspense and thrill of the opening title sequence as classical music is usually seen as calming, however in this case it is used to scare the audience. Mise En Scene The scene is set in a dark house which adds to the feeling of horror and terror There are props such as a teddy bear, a plastic horse and a lava lamp in the child’s room which gives the audience an understanding of the child’s innocence and naïveté.

Titles All of the titles are presented in red sans serif fonts which gradually fade away with green mist which is relevant to the plot of the narrative.
