Welcome to Debating S2

What is a Debate? A debate is a formal ‘argument’ between two teams who disagree about an important issue or topic. There are TWO teams – each team has three (3) speakers. One team is the AFFIRMATIVE TEAM. They agree with the issue or topic. (and most things that the other team says!) The other is the NEGATIVE TEAM. They disagree with the issue or topic (and most things that the other team says!) Each team must try to persuade the audience that their team is RIGHT and the other team is WRONG!

Topic ( Also known as “The Moot” ) Affirmative Team (We agree with the topic) 3 speakers -First Affirmative -Second Affirmative -Third Affirmative Negative Team (We disagree with the topic) 3 speakers -First Negative -Second Negative -Third Negative

Groups Your groups of three have been preselected. Get into your groups as organised by your teacher 1.Decide who is the quiet but confident person in your group … you are first speaker. 2.Decide who is the loudest and most outspoken … you are the third speaker. 3.The person remaining is the solid second speaker!

Get ready for your topics… This term in Modern Studies, you have been looking at topics in relation to human impact on the world around us. e.g. The Environment Global Warming Carbon Footprints Pollution Recycling Acid Rain Emissions Alternative Energy Sources

Your Group’s Moot Is … … that Drummond CHS needs to be more environmentally Proactive. … that we are not doing enough for the environment. …. That Nuclear energy is the best solution to our energy problems. …

Get Ready…. Go!!! Butcher Paper Activity In your groups on your sheet of paper … 1.Write down the title of your moot. 2.Are there any words in your moot that you need to explain or define? ….. `look at the next page - you should be discussing the words in green from your topic ….

Discuss the meaning of the underlined words in your group’s topic … that Drummond CHS needs to be more environmentally proactive. … that we are not doing enough for the environment. …. That nuclear energy is the best solution to our environmental problems.

Next … Brainstorm Everything you can think of about your topic Topic

NEXT: The Split (Also Known as “Who will talk about What!!) Try to “fit” your brainstormed ideas into approximately 3 or 4 main topics or headings. This will be quite tricky and will need some thought. … Here’s some main topic headings that might help you.

e.g that we are not doing enough for the environment. PROBLEM 1 AND SOLUTION 1 PROBLEM 2 AND SOLUTION 2 GENERAL OVERVIEW OF THE ISSUE AND WHY CHANGE IS NEEDED. WHAT WE CURRENTLY DO AND WHAT WE SHOULD DO OTHER? Too many cars. Solution: Cheaper public t/port Higher fuel prices, Higher car prices Fuel vouchers for car poolers Plastic bags and excess packaging. Solutions Discounts for own bags when shopping Wrapping produce in paper … We are a world of polluters, pumping chemicals into waterways, clearing forests for our urban sprawl. Excessive spending on consumer goods …. The world already recycle, reuses, reduce. Hybrid cars Energy Efficiency appliances, Etc etc => Need to cut down even more Polluters Pay … businesses pay an environment levy (tax).

e.g. …. That nuclear energy is the best solution to our environmental problems. PROBLEM 1 AND SOLUTION 1 PROBLEM 2 AND SOLUTION 2 GENERAL OVERVIEW OF THE ISSUE AND WHY CHANGE IS NEEDED. WHAT WE CURRENTLYDO AND WHAT WE SHOULD DO OTHER? fossil fuels are limited resources Wind energy is an excellent solution Fossil fuels cause pollution `nuclear energy is clean and safe if contained properly Fossil fuels are limited, Polluting Heating expensive Lights on all night in city buildings Excessive usage due to so many appliances/ heating Can be dangerous Examples: Chernobyl, Japan Not suitable for areas where there are earthquake zones.

that Drummond CHS needs to be more environmentally proactive. PROBLEM 1 AND SOLUTION 1 PROBLEM 2 AND SOLUTION 2 GENERAL OVERVIEW OF THE ISSUE AND WHY CHANGE IS NEEDED. WHAT WE CURRENTLYDO AND WHAT WE SHOULD DO OTHER? Excessive use of paper. Solutions Poor energy efficiency (excessive lighting/power usage) Solutions School’s are one of the biggest users of paper and waste. Electricity – lights left on, computers, printers … Enviro Groups Bronze rating Recycle paper Is this enough? Can we do more? Litter? Noise? Visual? (where are our trees, gardens, compost heaps)

Team Line (Slogan) Your team needs to think up a short, clever, statement that sums up your team’s argument (or “case”) e.g. “We only have ONE world … and we need to protect it.” “Let’s leave the environment in good condition for the children of tomorrow.” “Recycling is not longer enough … we need to do more! SAY YOUR TEAM LINE AT THE BEGINNING AND END OF EACH SPEAKER’S TALK.

Now that your team has decided on your topic and what you want to speak about … You need to decide who is going to talk about what This is called the “Team Split” because you split the topic up for each speaker. …. And begin writing your speeches.

The Role of each Speaker (Handout) First Speaker must: Introduce the topic and slogan Introduce team and what each will talk about. Discuss/argue your first main point

The Role of each Speaker Second Speaker must: Rebutt/argue with /correct any comments that the opposition team has made that you disagree with. Summarise what your first speaker has said …. And Discuss your other main points.

The Role of each Speaker Third Speaker must: Rebutt/argue with/correct any comments that the opposition team has made that you disagree with. Lots and Lots and Lots of rebutting! Summarise your team’s “case” and convince everyone that YOUR team is right and the other team is wrong!

Speaking Order 1)First Affirmative 3)Second Affirmative 5)Third Affirmative 2)First Negative 4)Second Negative 6)Third Negative

How to Speak in a Debate Use small palm cards (do NOT simply read them with your head down!) Use your voice to emphasise what you are saying. Use your hands to gesture. Look at the audience and the chairperson Talk loudly, clearly and use tone, pace and pause effectively. Convince us that you ARE right and that the other team IS definitely wrong!
