Big data and learning: building and learning from LearnSphere (…because the next generation DataShop was just too incremental) John Stamper Pittsburgh Science of Learning Center Human-Computer Interaction Institute Carnegie Mellon University 11/9/2014

Why collect student data for Sharing? There is a lot of data available now New scientific discoveries & to advance learning sciences Save costs by sharing data Better assessment of learners along multiple dimensions Social, cognitive, emotional, meta-cognitive, etc. Individual, group, institutional, etc. Better real-time support for learners 2

Past Experience with DataShop DataShop, part of the Pittsburgh Science of Learning Center LearnLab World’s largest open repository of transactional data from educational systems Currently holds almost 175 million student actions representing over 400,000 hours of student data 3

DataShop and Privacy DataShop has full data management controls All data is anonymized at the dataset level Sharing is possible at several levels if a series of conditions hold 4

Show Flow Chart 5

What is LearnSphere? LearnSphere is a new data repository that builds on what we have learned from DataShop 2 Major innovations – Multiple data models and community supported tools – Distributed platform 6

LearnSphere Has a start date of 1/1/2015 Project to build will run 5 years Collaboration between CMU, MIT, Stanford, and U of Memphis 7

Will Privacy and IRB be a concern? tion/2014/10/data- mining_research_privacy_NSF.html tion/2014/10/data- mining_research_privacy_NSF.html 8

Privacy and IRB in LearnSphere Intent of LearnSphere is to include additional data that will likely lead to additional privacy concerns. – Forum data – Demographic data – Affective state data – Biometric data? 9
