America and Ancient Roman Immigration By Scott Thibeault, Alex Goodwin, and Jordan Bathe

Maps

U.S. Statistics  35.2 million immigrants

Timeline of Rome  Caesar expands Rome  Conquered all of Italy by 264 B.C.  By 146 B.C. Spain, Carthage, and Macedonia are conquered.  Conquered Gaul, Asia Minor, and Numidia by 44 B.C.

Difference between Assimilation and Immigration  Assimilation: people forced to be citizens.  Immigration: People come by themselves.  America doesn’t force citizenship.

Roman Assimilation  Rome forces citizenship.  Forces culture blend.  Welfare = free grain to poor.  Jobs to the jobless.

Reasons for Immigration to U.S.  America is wealthy and has freedom  “All men are created equal.” Martin Luther King Jr.  Better jobs and better living.  Running from war.

Two Powerful Countries  Supreme leading countries.  Both set examples.  Gives immigrants safety.  Strong armies.

Problems with Rome  Unstable government at times.  Always in War.  Constant expansion.  Considered “too powerful”  Citizens/other countries will rebel.

Problems with America  Overpopulation.  Not many jobs: Recession.  Illegal immigrants.  Large debt.

Conclusion  America is following Rome in some ways, but not all  Similar strategies in keeping people happy.  Both are powerful.  America has different struggles than Rome.
