Kingdom Protista
Protists Protista is made up of mostly unicellular organisms that do not fit into any other kingdom Can be heterotrophic or autotrophic Most live in water or moist environments ALL are eukaryotic Protista = the very first
Classification Classified according to how they obtain nutrition and how they move 1. Animal-like Protists 2. Plant-like 3. Fungus-like
Animal-like Protista Also called Protozoa Classified by the way they move into 4 different phyla 1.Zooflagellates – flagella 2.Sarcodines – pseudopodia (Amoeba) 3.Ciliates – cilia (Paramecium) 4.Sporozoans – do not move (Plasmodia)
Plant-like Protists Contain chlorophyll and perform photosynthesis They can be either unicellular or multicellular Many contain pigments that give them a variety of colors Examples: Euglenoids, Algae, Diatoms, Dinoflagellates
Algae Make up the base of aquatic food chains Phytoplankton make up half of the photosynthesis that occurs on earth Can cause “red tides” or algal blooms that are toxic Unicellular: plankton, Euglena Multicellular: Green algae, Brown algae, Red
Algae
Unicellular Organisms
Fungus-like Protista Decomposers that live on dead organic matter Usually found under fallen leaves or rotting logs
