A short story by Tim O’Brien “On the Rainy River” A short story by Tim O’Brien

Fiction vs Autobiography When you read "On the Rainy River," did you think of it as a story or an autobiographical account? Why? Actually, the story is a hybrid—it is based on O'Brien's experiences, but is not necessarily true in every detail. What are the benefits of this approach, from a writer's perspective? What is your own evaluation of this approach?

Idealism and Truth "What idea does Tim O’Brien suggest about the significance of idealism and truth in an individual's life?"

Opposition Summarize the reasons the narrator gives for his opposition to the Vietnam War.

Armour Meat Factory The narrator's job at the Armour Meat Factory in some ways anticipates the experience of fighting in Vietnam. How? Do you think the author was right to include the graphic descriptions of the slaughterhouse? Explain.

Knowledge of War In your opinion, does the reader need to have a personal knowledge of the issues regarding the Vietnam War to appreciate this story? Why or why not?

Waiting Reread the opening paragraph of the story. Now that you have read the whole account, why do you think the narrator waited so long to tell his story?

Emotional Changes Identify the emotional changes the narrator experiences as he moves toward his final decision. Should he have accepted his draft notice, or should he have sought sanctuary in Canada as a draft-dodger?
