Cranial cavity Prof. Samir Ahmed Malik Alafraabi dental collage

Target or Highlight 1-Blood vessels& venous sinus cavernous sinus. 2-cranialnerves 1 st 12 th cr. 3-pitutory gland. 4- folds of dura matter.

Head The major compartment of the head are the following: a- cranial cavity. B-two ears C-two orbit. D-two nose E-oral cavity The cranial cavity is the largest compartment; containing brain & meninges, proximal part of the cranial nerves ;12 pairs, blood vessels (vertebrobasillar&internal carotid; S shapeor siphone like& venous sinus

Anterior, middle &posterior cranial fossae.: The anterior showing;olfactory bulb, olfactory nerves, frontal crest crista jalli &superior sagittal sinus. Middle cranial fossa; 3, 4,5,6 cr.& optic nerve, free border of tenterium cerebelli, hypophyseal fossa, cavenous sinus. Posterior fossa showing;7, 8, 9, 10,11& 12cr., tenterium cerebelli, superior sagittal sinus, transverse& sigmoid sinus, medulla oblongata & spinal root of the 11cr,vertebral& spinal arteries

Refer to the practical part

Cranial nerves

The brain is surrounded by 3 covering called meninges 1.Dura 2. Arachnoid 3. Pia The dura matter is the outermost fibrous layer which is firmly attached to the bones It is formed of two layers firmly attached to each other except at certain sites where they separate to form dural folds

Lateral wall of the cavernous sinus 3;oculomotor 4;trochlear. V1;ophthalamic nerve. V2; maxillary nerve. 6; abducent with the internal carotid artery Siphone like

The cavernus sinus, pituitary gland, sphenoid air sinus, nasal cavity &optic chiasma.

Maxillary nerve

Falx cerebri It is sickle shaped and lies in the sagittal plane between the 2 cerebral hemispheres Its apex attached to cresta galli and frontal crest Its base attached to tentorium cerebelli

Tentorium cerebelli It is tent like and form the roof of posterior cranial fossa between the cerebrum & cerebellum. Having free &attached border. Falx cerebelli It is a small triangular fold between the 2 cerebellar hemishere.

Superior sagittal sinus, arachnoids granulation tissue (C..S.F. circulation), meningeal veins & their injury in old age & coma

What the important structure which is present or founded in the middle of the cranial fossa?

Answer: There are several structure the most important is hypothesis' cereberi or the pituitary gland. Clavus & two vertebral arteries forming the basilar artery & foramen magnum optic chiasma & olfactory nerves

1-Crista jalli 2-cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone 3lesser wing of the sphenoid bone 4-anterior clinoid process 5-hypophyseal fossa 6-foramen ovale 7-foramen spinosum 8-greater wing of the sphenoid bone& groove for middle meningeal artery 9-petrous part of temporal bone.with two hiatus. 10-groove for sigmoid sinus. 11-jagular foramen. 12-groove for transverse sinus.
