Body Tube Nosepiece Objectives Stage Clips Light Ocular lens (Eyepiece) Arm Stage Coarse Adjustment Fine Adjustment Always carry a microscope with one hand holding the arm and one hand under the base. Base Diaphragm

What’s my power? To calculate the power of magnification, multiply the power of the ocular lens by the power of the objective. What are the powers of magnification for each of the objectives we have on our microscopes?

Comparing Powers of Magnification At high power of magnification… More detail Less complete image Which of these images is at a higher power of magnification?

Light vs. Electrons Electron microscopes use ______ instead of light Offers higher zoom power Fly foot!Blood cells electrons

Part I = Microscope Lab Practice using the microscope Give both partners a chance to use the microscope; especially those who haven’t used one before! Answer ALL questions

Part II = Cell Comparison Lab Read all directions BEFORE working #7 cork is not a Demo Materials to pick up: One microscope per pair Group basket for 2 pairs Don’t forget to clean up completely Turn in lab sheets at end of class

Lab Procedure Work in partners Materials: 1 basket for every 2 partners (front table) 1 microscope per pair (side counter) 1 of each of the following per pair: potato slice, onion slice, cork slice, toothpick (front table) Safety: Don’t pick up a toothpick until you need it Don’t put iodine in your mouth!
