General user guidelines New users –Notify the lab ( –Go over lab protocol slides –If in doubt, ask Sign up for equipment time on WiscCal (see Jay), notify others if you will be unable to use your time Replace items when taking the last one Make sure that supplies are reordered before running out Refill pipette boxes, solvent bottles

General user guidelines Label all chemicals Remove materials and clean common areas (microscope, hoods, etc.) after finishing work Leave a note/check with other users prior to borrowing equipment (e.g. radiometer) Promptly return equipment when done The room should like it was when you entered

Hoods organic SOLVENT and ACID/BASE in separate hoods Solvent = acetone, methanol, IPA Keep carboy closed at all times Keep sash windows shut when not using

3006 –Types of Trash Monomer Contaminated Glass –Rinse with solvent into carboy (keep closed at all times) –Once dry, place in broken glass container Chemical Contaminated Labware (kimwipes, pipette tips) –Put in “Oily Waste” yellow container –When full, close bag and label “Contaminated Labware, monomer, plastic pipettes, paper products”

3006 – Acticure If left on, note when you will be done using for the day UV must be on for at least 20 minutes, can be left on during the morning Do not adjust settings without permission while others are logged in Dispose of dirty pipettes, paper towels, etc. Leave fan on for 15 minutes after turning off UV

3041 Spinner –Take out chuck before cleaning –Replace aluminum foil after you finished PDMS Scale –Clean up around and top of the scale after measuring and mixing –Dispose of unused PDMS or let others finish excess Use separate dishes for first/second development steps Save fresh SU-8 developer Hood –Keep sash windows closed –Keep solvent carboy closed

2046 – Cell Trash Cell contaminated devices or glass (no virus, or recombinant stuff) –Spray with some 1-10% bleach solution –Put in broken glass disposal Large amounts of cell waste should be dealt with elsewhere and should be autoclaved!

Other Instruments in labs Analytical Balance measure up to 0.1 mg max 50 gm Static brush clean after use Spectrophotometer Drill press Syringe Pumps Goniometer pH meter Please keep them clean and in working condition UV sources switch off when not in use leave off for 15min b/f restart Log usage

Sharps disposal in labs Sharps - JUST needles with syringe bodies –Do not recap needles –Expose any prepolymer mixture before putting in sharps container –Do not overfill the sharps container –Call Chemical safety to come pick up the boxes when full –Make sure to get a replacement sharps container - Fisher sells them

Water in labs RGW – “Reagent Grade Water” General purpose DI Water – Nanopure, ~ 18 Mohm Tap water Make sure that you refill with the right water
