 Louisiana Purchase  Bought from France  Doubled the size of the nation  Jefferson doubted the Constitution gave him the power to make the purchase.

 War of 1812  US was angry over impressment.  British were supplying weapons to Native Americans to fight American settlers.  War Hawks demanded war.  American military was small and underfunded but the British were occupied with France in Europe.  British burnt Washington D.C.  Andrew Jackson was very successful in New Orleans.  US wins the war.

 Consequences of the war.  1. End of the Federalist Party  2. Growth of American industry.  3. Confirms the US is free and independent.  War ends with the Treaty of Ghent in Fun Fact: Named by George Washington in 1797, USS Constitution is the oldest commissioned naval vessel afloat.In the War of 1812, during the battle with the British ship,Guerriere she became known as " Old Ironsides " because the walnut sides of the ship were so dense that cannon balls bounced off them,.

 Monroe Doctrine  Fear of European colonization prompted Monroe to address foreign policy.  Declared that the Western Hemisphere is no longer available for European colonization.  Any country attempting to colonize will be considered a threat to the safety of the United States.
