Presentation transcript:

Can you join all the dots using only 4 straight lines, and not taking your pen off the page?

The Solution … To be successful, you had to think “outside the box” …

We all interpret the world around us differently … Psychologists are only human – they have varying beliefs about the world, and what causes people to behave in certain ways These beliefs will affect: - what they choose to study - how they choose to study it For example …

Which of your hemispheres is the most dominant? LEFT BRAIN FUNCTIONS uses logic detail oriented facts rule words and language present and past math and science can comprehend knowing acknowledges order/pattern perception knows object name reality based forms strategies practical safe RIGHT BRAIN FUNCTIONS uses feeling "big picture" oriented imagination rules symbols and images present and future philosophy & religion can "get it" (i.e. meaning) believes appreciates spatial perception knows object function fantasy based presents possibilities impetuous risk taking

Which one sounds more like you? Left? Right? Somewhere in the middle?

Question: Do you see the dancer turning clockwise or anti-clockwise?

Right or Left Brain Dominant? If you see her spinning around clockwise, you’re likely to be a creative person. Everyone seeing her spinning anti - clockwise is likely to be more logic oriented and probably good at maths! In terms of physiological psychology, seeing her move clockwise indicates you are “Right Brain Dominant”, while a counter-clockwise person is “Left Brain Dominant” Some people can flip between both!!

Most people see the dancer turning anti- clockwise However you can try to focus and change the direction; see if you can do it. If you start counting backwards from 100 it might help!

Right or Left Brain Dominant?

What else could affect whether you are left or right brain dominant? These are the kinds of questions psychologists ask – there are many different psychological approaches that they can consider when trying to find the answer.

The main approaches in psychology are We will be examining these approaches by looking at issues and key studies from each of during the first year COGNITIVE BIOLOGICAL SOCIAL LEARNING

What A Level Psychology is NOT...

Do your friends seek you out for advice? Does being a good listener mean you’ll make a good psychology student? NO! But you could make an amazing counsellor

A counsellor is... someone who is trained to listen to people. Not many psychologists are counsellors!

What’s the difference between a psychologist and a counsellor? A psychologist is someone who studies the mind and behaviour.

While people often think of ‘talking therapy’ when they hear the word psychologist; this is not actually accurate.

Psychology encompasses a wide range of specialty areas including such things as animal research, marketing and architecture.

56 The American Psychological Association (APA) recognizes 56 distinct divisions, each representing a specialised field within psychology Including: military psychology; psychology of religion; psychopharmacology; health psychology; clinical psychology; educational psychology; developmental psychology; trauma psychology; neuropsychology...

‘A’ level psychology IS SCIENCEA SCIENCE - containing elements of biology, physics & chemistry... Theories Research Hypotheses Evaluating Investigating Statistics

In groups of 4 please Around the room are 6 different pieces of psychological research…. Only one is fake In your groups, can you decide which one is the fake… You will need to justify your decision so make sure you have your reasons!!! Fact or Fake task…
