The Compound Sentence A compound sentence consists of two or more main independent clauses. *Most compound sentences have two independent clauses joined by a comma and a coordinating conjunction.

The Compound Sentence Linda ran a two-day computer seminar, and ten managers agreed to speak. All of the managers taught on the first day; two were missing the second day.

The Complex Sentence Complex sentences consists of one main or independent clause and one or more subordinate clauses.

The Complex Sentence The main clause can stand alone as a simple sentence. The subordinate clause cannot stand alone as a sentence.
