Sleeping Freshman Never Lie By: Emily, Luis, Wilmer, and Andrew

Tom Swifties Tom Swifties are a play on words that came from people making fun of an old writer named Tom Swift. He never just said anything, there was always an adverb.

Example “ I want a hot dog,” Tom said frankly. Another word for hot dog is frank, so the word frankly was used to describe how “Tom” said the sentence.

Example “Give me a hair cut,” Tom said barbarously. A person who cuts hair is called a barber, so the writer used the word barbarously to describe how “Tom” said the sentence.

Scott uses what he learns in English class to write this book. Tom Swifties are the first thing Scott uses to narrate and are a big part of the book. So we chose to do a project about the book written in “Scott Swifties.”

“Sleeping freshman never lie,” Scott said truthfully. “ Sleeping freshman never lie,” Scott said vertically.

“I am starting high school,” Scott said freshly. “I am a freshmen,” Scott said newly.

“I like to read,” Scott said novely.

“I am never going to survive this year,” Scott said gravely.

“I write to my future brother whom I call Smelly,” Scott said foully.

“Bobby and Dad are good with their hands,” Scott said manually. “My brother Bobby plays the guitar,” Scott said musically.

“Julia is as hot as the sun,” Scott said brightly. “ I get nervous around Julia,” Scott said shyly. “I try to join every club Julia does,” Scott said obsessively.

“I write for the school newspaper,” Scott said impressively.

“I won the student council seat,” Scott said victoriously.

“My mom is pregnant,” Scott said childishly. “My mom has mood swings,” Scott said emotionally.

“Wesley is scary,” Scott said hauntingly. “I think Wesley steals things,” Scott said illegally.

“Mouth can’t shut up,” Scott said talkatively. “Mouth is very noisy,” Scott said loudly.

“My best friend Patrick left for Texas,” Scott said movingly.

“My brother Bobby left because he was irritated,” Scott said angrily.

“Lee seems emo,” Scott said cuttingly.

“Lee says what is on her mind,” Scott said bluntly. “Lee is kind of strange,” Scott said weirdly.

“My friends broke apart,” Scott said partially.

“I'm friends with the bully Wesley,” Scott said strongly. “When I’m with Wesley I feel safe,” Scott said securely.

“Vernon beat me up,” Scott said strikingly.

“Kelly lied to me,” Scott said falsely.

“I can’t wait to go to the dance with Lee,” Scott said eagerly.

“My mom is as big as a horse,” Scott said stably.

“My Mom gave birth to Sean during my school dance,” Scott said maternally.

“I am happy with Lee, Wesley, and Sean,” Scott said gaily.

Now You Try! In your groups make a Tom Swifty describing something important in your book.
