Strand #1 American Heritage Web Sites 1. This site has selected articles on America’s history, purchase, and information about flags. 2. This site has interesting interviews with historians This site allows you to find calendar dates for any day in history or in the future. It can also be used to create current event calendars of Ohio’s past This site has historical artifacts, documents, photos tracing the history of African-Americans in our area This site has activities and resource information about Ohio’s history.

Strand #1 American Heritage Activities 1.Do newspaper articles documenting events in Ohio’s past. 2.Create a class timeline of evens in students lives and correlate them to events in Ohio’s history. 3. Create posters depicting the change African- Americans have seen through the years in the Ohio area. 4. Visit to view unknown artifacts. Writewww.ohiohistory.com stories about what you think the artifacts could be. 5.List things in Ohio that are the same or different from how they were 200 years ago.

Strand #2 People in Societies Web Sites 1. This site explores the whole world discovering differences in environment and culture This site is an international directory of indigenous people This site provides a purpose of culture, interpretation of culture, and has a social organization gallery This site has biographies, fiction, and travelogues illuminating intercultural relations Join Olivia Owl and Parsifal Penguin as they tour the world.

Activities 1. Throughout the unit, students will take journeys to places around the world using the internet and other books. Bring in food and other examples from that culture for students to experience. 2. Do the Flat Stanley project and send Stanley all over the world. 3. Bring in guest speakers to talk about their cultural background and how it relates to us. 4. Discuss differences in people from around the world and how we are all really the same in many ways. 5. Keep travelogues or diaries by students about what they Learned or are learning about different cultures.

Strand #3 World Interactions Web Sites 1. This site allows you to make a map to anywhere This site has country maps, flags and profiles This site surveys current earthquake activity with maps and photos This site offers programs for benifiting the environment and communities around the world This site has information about Earth day and events around the world.

Activities 1.Create a classroom map of your community. Use symbols to represent airports and other common landmarks. 2. Create a fictional map of a fictional town. Let students plan and decide where to put houses, schools, gas stations ect Using the cardinal directions, have students work with these directions in the classroom. For example- Group one meets by the north pencil sharpener or group two meets by the east computers. 4. Discuss ways to help disaster victims and actually send relief items to disaster areas. 5. Using internet sites create maps to various places.

Strand #4 Decision Making and Resources Web Sites 1. This site has models for group decision making This site has graphic representations of the effective decision making process This site has information about adolescent decision making and prevention programs This site allows you to view charts about the nations imports and exports This site allows you to browse through goods and services and pick your price.

Activities 1.Put students in groups and tell them they are community leaders. Give each group a different social issue to solve. 2. Discuss decision making under pressure. Role play the results of good and bad decisions. 3. Using a chart, have students classify goods and services within the school and community. 4. Graph what the US imports and exports. 5. Using priceline.com, allow students in groups to shop for a list of items.

Strand #5 Democratic Process Web Sites 1. This site educates kids about the democratic process This site teaches responsible participation in the democratic process This site has an analysis of the 2000 election This site tracks the opinions and actions of elected officials in relation to important issues This site shows how the democratic process has effected Nigeria.

Activities 1.Create classroom rules, consequences, and a due process. 2. Put voluntary students on trial for an imaginary crime, use lawyers and a judge and jury. 3. Set-up the classroom for an election. Discuss important issues and elect leaders. 4. Bring in government officials to discuss their role in society. 5. List issues important to students and ways that they can use the democratic process to change things.

Strand #6 Citizenship Rights and Responsibilities Web Sites 1. This site helps you to find information about protection,rights and responsibilities This site gives lessons on “We the People” and what responsibilities accompany our rights This site takes a look at Canada’s citizenship as compared to the US This site teaches the responsibility of citizenship This site provides lesson plans for citizenship, and traces the evolution of the concept of citizenship.

Activities 1.Bring in community leaders to discuss the responsibility of managing a community. 2. Group students and have them create a project about reaching goals. Let them set a goal, delegate tasks, perform responsibilities and decide if the goals were reached. 3. Investigate, using the Better Business Bureau, businesses and evaluate them to make decisions. 4. Make a chart correlating rights with responsibilities. 5. Analyze the Bill of Rights and discuss what they mean and why they were created.
