My project: 23andMe.com : Emerging genetic testing services from online websites23andMe.com 23andMe.com services offered genetic testing for certain diseases. It currently only offers an individual to discover their ancestral origins with the use of one’s own DNA. The FDA is currently preventing 23andMe from conducting genetic testing for certain diseases. This presentation will have the following elements:The services that 23andMe.com offer and how they perform these services, an explanation of why the FDA has prevented 23andMe.com from conducting certain tests and the reliability of their services and how it potential affects physicians. Genetic testing is a poplar idea in preventive medicine, and 23andme.com has taken the first step to make genetic testing commercial, and affordable. This method can be used in the future by individuals to understand what diseases may afflict them and provide physicians with valuable data.23andMe.com 23andme.com

What is 23andme? It is an online service that offered genetic testing for certain disease, but now currently offers an ancestry service The individual provides a small amount of DNA (in the form of cheek cells) 23andme relies on single nucleotide polymorphisms and genotypes (of certain genes) to provide a “diagnosis” and ancestral linage

The FDA’s role Recently the FDA has prevented 23andme.com from providing services on detecting certain diseases23andme.com The FDA’s main concern is due to the reliability of the tests for genetic disease testing and the long term psychological effects Due to their current restrictions, 23andme.com is only able to provide ancestral information23andme.com Figure 1.Illumina HumanOmniExpress-24 format chip. This is used by 23andme.com to obtain ancestral information.23andme.com

The potential benefits While 23andme.com’s methods were determined by the FDA to be unreliable, the data accumulated could be used by scientists and doctors to gain insights about diseases.23andme.com This would be potentially beneficial is 23andme.com’s methods can become more reliable and available via database. 23andme.com
