General Safety Rules 9. Perform only those lab activities assigned 10. Work areas should be kept clean. Only lab handouts and notebooks should be brought to the work areas. 11. Other books, purses, backpacks etc. should be left at your desk or placed in a designated storage area.

General Safety Rules Food or drink are never allowed back in the lab area. Water bottles may be left in the front part of the classroom.

General Safety Rules Follow all instructions - written and oral. May have to wear apron. And/or safety goggles

General Safety Rules Always use the prescribed instrument (tongs, test-tube holder, forceps, etc.) for handling apparatus or equipment. Never touch or taste any substance in the lab unless instructed to do so by Mrs. Wilson.

General Safety Rules Never put your face near the mouth of a container that is holding chemicals. When testing for odors, use a wafting motion to direct the odors to your nose. Never smell any chemical unless instructed to do so.

General Safety Rules 13. Any activity involving poisonous vapors should be conducted in the fume hood. 14.Dispose of waste materials as instructed by Mrs.Wilson.

General Safety Rules Clean up spills immediately. Clean and wipe dry all work surfaces at the end of class. Wash your hands thoroughly. Know the location of emergency equipment (eye wash, fire extinguisher, shower, etc.) and how to use them. Report all accidents to Mrs. Wilson immediately.

Chemical Safety When mixing an acid and water, always add the acid to the water. Avoid touching chemicals with your hands. If chemicals do come in contact with your hands, wash them immediately.

Glassware Safety Handle all glass with care. Tell Mrs. Wilson if you break any glass

Glassware Safety Never handle broken glass with your bare hands. Use a brush and dustpan to clean up broken glass. Dispose of the glass as directed by your teacher. Never use chipped or cracked glassware.

Lab Safety Rules Other rules may be added as needed to ensure safety for all students.

First Aid

First Aid Tell Mrs. Wilson about ANY and ALL injuries, no matter how small they may appear to be.

First Aid Injury: Burns To Do: Immediately flush with cold water until burning sensation is lessened.

First Aid Injury: Cuts, bruises To Do: Do not touch an open wound without safety gloves. Pressing directly on minor cuts will stop bleeding in a few minutes. Apply cold compress to bruises to reduce swelling.

First Aid Injury: Fainting To Do: Provide fresh air and have the person recline so that their head is lower than the rest of their body.

First Aid Injury: The eyes To Do: Flush eyes immediately with plenty of water for several minutes. If a foreign object is lodged in the eye, do not allow the eye to be rubbed.

First Aid Injury: Poisoning To Do: Find out what substance was responsible for the poisoning and alert Mrs. Wilson immediately.

First Aid Injury: Spills on the skin To Do: Flush with large quantities of water. For acid spills, apply baking soda solution. For base spills, apply vinegar or boric acid. In VERY rare instances the shower may be used. NEVER use the shower without permission – there are no drains and it will cause severe flooding. You will be held financially responsible for all damages if you are found to have used the shower without permission.

First Aid Injury: Electrical shock To Do: Shut off the current at the source. Remove wire with rubber gloves. Alert Mrs. Wilson immediately.

Lastly You are financially responsible for ALL items you break or damage in the laboratory. BE CAREFUL!
