Kanchhi Maya Sherpa This picture is the group of women who is inovolved in Women literacy program (WLP) Women literacy program was started in Phaplu, Sallery VDC, almost two years ago. Women learned about the need of clean environment, hygiene and sanitation through the courses they are learning. Women's of the literacy program felt the necessity of not just learning it but also use it practically. They decided to start community cleaning program. They decided to request every member of household in Phaplu area to come to participate in cleaning program every 2 nd day of the month. They also decided to make it compulsory for every household to send at least one member for the cleaning program. They decided to charge fine of Rs. 350 if any one from the household fails to participate in the cleaning program. This program is being run successfully in Phaplu, Solukhumbu. Every 2 nd day of month they come out to the street and collect the plastics, papers, bottles or any thing that is thrown in the street. They collect it and send it to the garbage collector. They also collected Rs through fining in the household for not participating in the cleaning program. With the amount collected through charging fines, they made wooden boxes to be used as dust bin and placed in different places of Phaplu area. I believe this is one good example of the change literacy program brought to the community. They have also started saving and credit program and initiated organic kitchen gardening as well. I am Kanchhi Maya Sherpa form Nepal, I have done my Bachelor Degree in Health Education and worked as a teacher for 3 years in a local community school and also conducted the literacy classes for women. Currently, I work as a coordinator of Women’s Literacy Program and a member of Board of Directors of the Vocational Training Centre, Phaplu, Solukhumbu. I also work as a treasurer of the executive committee of Himalayan Health and Environmental Services Solukhumbu (HHESS). HHESS is a non-government and non-profit organization. The main goal of our organization is to develop all himalayan and rural communities, to empowering, practicing and helping them access and manages the resources they need to be self sufficient and independent and the main objectives is to provide minimum facility to those needy people who are deprived from basic facilities to sustain their life. This course will help me a lot to improve my ability to work in the field of adult education and assume a role of leadership in the AE movement in Nepal.
