Department of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics Current AEM Department First courses offered in aeronautical engineering at UMN 1936 – Program established One of the first 10 programs in the country. Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics department is ranked in the top 10 of the nation. 16 Faculty Members Fluid Mechanics, Solid Mechanics, Aerospace Systems 10 Staff Members 340 Undergraduate Students 110 Graduate Students Funding Institutional Support -- $ 3,100,000/year External Funding -- $ 4,800,000/year Endowment Funding -- $1,300,000

Department of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics AEM Location Akerman Hall & Hangar Rosemount Aeronautics Laboratory (RAL) acquired by UMN from US Army for use by program RAL Spin off companies: Rosemount Engineering (Goodrich Aerospace) Fluidyne Engineering MTS Akerman Hall and Hangar were completed in 1948 AEM moves in. No major renovation or upgrades since completion Third floor of the Hangar was added

No action taken – Space Study – Leo A. Daly Architectural Firm Inefficient use of space and outdated systems 2008 – Component Forensic Study – RSP Architects Project first look at costs Findings: AEM laboratories and office space are seriously limited, outdated and not code compliant. Space for undergraduate student collaboration, team building and interaction is currently limited in the building. No entrance to building and exterior is dilapidated and unattractive. Akerman Hall Hangar is ideally location on UMN campus 1 st East Bank building on Scholars Walk. Main entrance to East Bank with Light Rail Transit at corner station at corner of Union St/Washington Ave. Across from McNamara Alumni Center and location of new Physics/Nanotechnology Building.

Tall, dramatic entry vestibule with glazed glass curtain wall to highlight student work and company partners AEM awarded $450,000 of University of Minnesota Capital Bonding Research Support funds to support renovation of 3 laboratories in the Akerman Hall hangar With $237,000 AEM matching Decision to pursue complete renovation of Akerman Hall Hangar made based on an architectural study.
