Enhanced Private-Public Alignment to Reduce World Hunger How to Increase Private Sector Participation

Hunger is a Blight on Our Humanity Hunger is morally unjustifiable --  bad for people and communities  bad for business  bad for peace Yet ,000,000 people world wide are faced with hunger Can we agree on the focus of our work?

What is the Focus of Our Work? Is it a problem of supply or access? Does it require an immediate or long term solution? Who’s Problem is it Anyway?

The Need for A Coordinated Global Food Banking Effort Increasing rates of hunger (developed and developing countries) Growing unacceptable waste of food (post-harvest crop loss, surplus, other) Hundreds of thousands of independently operated hunger-fighting agencies / NGOs Too little professionalism in sourcing and distributing food Too few vetted, community or national global hunger voices Private and public sector anti-hunger resources not adequately aligned

Global food surplus – issue is access, not supply World smaller, grocery products companies growing larger Proven solutions exist People, businesses, foundations and governments believe and trust private donors and volunteers. Increased willingness to share (GFN’s basis for existence) Climate for success is better than in many years The Opportunity for A Coordinated Global Food Banking Effort

Private Sector Role of Food Banks: A Role Defined by… Need to bring the voice and work of hunger agencies together to create authority and leverage Need to create an efficient network of aligned agencies to increase awareness, public policy and the amount of available food Need to achieve a balance of the commercial food distribution model with the food sourcing model Need to create self-sufficiency

Private Resources Clients Served Social Service Agency Private Sector Response …Are there enough resources and at what cost? …Are those in need being served and at what cost?

THE GFN MISSION & VISION The Global FoodBanking Network (GFN) works collaboratively to reduce world hunger by securing more food and enhancing the ability to efficiently distribute food through food banks and food bank networks around the globe. Our vision is a world without hunger. Our belief is that food banking is an essential part of the solution.

GFN Support for Food Bank Development 1.Align Feeding Organizations and Supporters 2.Assess Needs and Food Sourcing Opportunities 3.Identify and develop sponsoring organizations 4.Business plan & strategic plan development 5.Capacity development 6.Food Sourcing Capacity Development, representing FB and FB networks to global grocery product leaders 7.Implementation and Operational Support 8.Network Development and Alignment, best practices, shared expertise and partnerships 9.GFN Monitoring and On-Going Member Support Services

GFN Founding Members America’s Second Harvest Canadian Association of Food Banks Mexican Association of Food Bank Argentine Association of Food Bank  Together, these organizations form the largest private hunger fighting network in the world, delivering 2.6 billion pounds of food to assist more than 32 million people annually.

Feeding school children in Ghana

We Can Do Better Today, there are approximately 1,000 food banks worldwide that distribute more than 3.5 billion pounds annually Members of GFN: 70% of food banks and 85% of all food The average food bank assists 40,000 people, providing approximately 75 pounds to each person per year But we reach less than 50 million of the 852 million hungry people Clearly we need to expand the reach and create more food banks

Any comments, questions?
