Overview of eLearning Opportunities for Morristown Students

What is eLearning Online Courses – Teachers and students work at a distance and do not meet at the same time. Distance Learning – Teachers and students meet at the same time but in different locations.

Distance Learning Courses High School Electives –Genetics –Holocaust AP/ Higher Level High School Courses –AP Calculus –Spanish IV/V College Courses through Canton College –Approaches to Literature –MicroEconomics

Why Offer Distance Learning? Educational opportunities for students Course offerings not possible at Morristown Morristown teacher can run a course (perhaps an elective) where local enrollment is too low College credit for students (Gives more value to senior year)

Distance Learning Cycle March/October Courses requested and potential courses to be taught May/November Firm up HS courses to be taught the following year Potential student numbers gathered for college courses June/December College registrations Collected (next sem) Selection of schools receiving courses is Tentative (next sem) August/January Selection of schools receiving courses is finalized with student names. Why Offer Online Courses? Educational opportunities for students eg: Marine biology, anthropology, computer programming Flexibility in scheduling- eg: Participation in Govt only offered in Fall, transfer students needing credit, health College credit for students (Gives more value to senior year) Prepare students for college

Challenges eLearning courses are not the norm for Morristown students Lack of student internal motivation Need to raise expectations of all stakeholders for all students

Next Steps Involve more students in eLearning thus change the “norm” Build awareness of opportunities Begin building awareness of eLearning opportunities at earlier grade levels Better publicize successes in eLearning Involve more teachers and try to offer Distance Learning courses from Morristown to use our local expertise
