Statistics AP Course Expectations

Guidelines for the Statistics AP Course We will emphasize statistical literacy and develop statistical thinking. We will use real data. We will stress conceptual understanding rather than mere knowledge of procedures. We will foster active learning in the classroom. We will use technology for developing conceptual understanding and analyzing data. We will use assessments to improve and evaluate student learning.

ABOUT THE AP EXAM

Structure of the Exam 40 Multiple-Choice Questions. These items are scored by subtracting ¼ of a point for every wrong answer from the total number of correct answers. Blank responses do not penalize the student. This section contributes 50% of the composite raw score grade of the examination. 6 Free-Response Questions. These include 5 Open- Ended Questions and 1 multi-step Investigative Task. These items are scored holistically using a rubric that specifies the criteria for placement of an answer in one of six categories. The Free Response items contribute 50% of the composite raw score of the exam.

6 Free-Response Questions Scoring Rubric Complete answer – 4 Substantial answer – 3 Developing answer – 2 Minimal answer – 1 Unacceptable answer – 0 Blank or off-task answer – no score Raw Score Of the 50%, the Open- Ended Questions are worth ¾ and the Investigative Task is worth ¼. Therefore, the Open-Ended Questions account for 37.5% of the overall grade and the Investigative Task accounts for 12.5% of the test.
