Let’s Talk Research CLADEA Research Series Interview with Dr. Sung - Woo Cho Columbia University Community College Research Center CRLA Boston 2013 Sharon L. Silverman, Ed.D. Martha E. Casazza, Ed.D. TRPP Associates

RESEARCH What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear “research”?

HOW DO YOU USE RESEARCH IN YOUR PRACTICE? Teaching Program Development Assessment

WHAT IS “TRPP TALKS”?

TRPP: A FRAMEWORK TO GUIDE US

INTERVIEW WITH DR. SUNG-WOO CHO Postdoctoral Research Associate Columbia University Community College Research Center

COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY COLLEGE RESEARCH CENTER: CCRC Housed at Teachers College, Columbia University Strategically assesses the problems and performance of community colleges in order to contribute to the development of practice and policy that expands access to higher education and promotes success for all students.

FOCUS OF INTERVIEW WITH DR. CHO “New Evidence of Success for Community College Remedial English Students: Tracking the Outcomes of Students in the Accelerated Learning Program (ALP)” Lessons Learned from Five Years of Developmental Education Acceleration Follow-up quantitative analysis of the Community College of Baltimore County’s Accelerated Learning Program (ALP).

GUIDING QUESTIONS FOR VIEWING INTERVIEW This interview describes a quantitative study. What do you expect to hear? Why? Dr. Cho talks about the use of qualitative studies in addition to quantitative research. How do you think these two research paradigms align? How do you think theory, research, principles and practice intersect?

IT ALL STARTS WITH THEORY Why theory?

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM UNDER STUDY? Students not passing course

WHAT DID THE RESULTS OF THE STUDY SHOW? Higher completion rates for students in ALP (Accelerated Learning Program)

HOW WAS THE DATA COLLECTED? Tracking the Cohorts

WHO WAS STUDIED? Students in the ALP and Dev Ed Courses

WHAT METHODOLOGY WAS USED? Regression Analysis Why?

WHAT CONCLUSIONS WERE REACHED? How well is the ALP program working?

WHAT IS PROPENSITY SCORE MATCHING? A method to enhance the study Why is it important?

WHAT ARE THE LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY? Randomized or not? Causal or Correlational?

HOW COULD AN IDEAL SITUATION BE ACCOMPLISHED?

HOW DID THE RESULTS INFORM PRACTICE? Support for ALP

CHALLENGES FOR OTHER INSTITUTIONS USING THESE RESULTS Acceptance of accelerated learning Openness to change

WHAT ADDITIONAL RESEARCH IS NEEDED IN DEVELOPMENTAL EDUCATION? Placement Assessment

ADVICE FOR NEW RESEARCHERS Develop Questions

QUANTITATIVE VS QUALITATIVE How do they each contribute? One without the other?

DISCUSSION What surprised you most about this study? Why? What is the significance of a causal or correlational study? What kind of study is this? Do you agree with the barriers Dr. Cho describes as other institutions use these data to inform decisions? What research do you think is most important for developmental education at this time?

WHAT’S NEXT What do you still want to know?
