Nurture group at Lambeth Academy The Nurture Group is a unique class within Lambeth Academy which caters for students with a range of SEND and supports them to access learning in a mainstream school with a differentiated curriculum.

Our curriculum- developing academic skills  Students in the Nurture Group have extra English and Maths lessons. This means they do not have separate MFL, Humanities and ICT classes.  The Nurture Curriculum follows the general English and Maths Curricula for Year 7.  The English Schemes of work will focus on reading for understanding, creative writing, punctuation skills, learning new vocabulary, and being able to talk about a text and express opinions and quote information from it.  In Maths, the curriculum focuses on number sense and skills, basic operations, simple problem solving skills and revising basic numeracy concepts.  We incorporate basic word processing skills and internet skills into the English Curriculum.

Our curriculum- developing life skills Other lessons in the Nurture Group focus on developing the following skills:  Fine motor skills- project lessons, artwork  Team work- pair group work, PE trips  Social Skills- Circle of Friends, Circle time,  Play opportunities- Numeracy games  Literacy/phonics- SRA Reading labels, LEXIA, Accelerated reader  Independent learning skills- research, reading, writing  General knowledge- Big Write, Humanities projects, Nature Documentaries

The Nurture Group Student- a profile Students will be considered for a place in the Nurture group if they :  Have a statement of SEN or EHC plan  Perform below age expected targets in Literacy and Numeracy  Present with complex SEND such as: – ASD – Dyslexia/Dyscalculia – Working memory – Developmental delay – SLCN – Moderate- severe Learning Difficulties – Fine/Gross motor Difficulties – VI – Medical diagnoses which can be accommodated in Mainstream secondary  Benefit from smaller class size to develop independence and confidence  Have medical needs which can be catered for in a large mainstream secondary school  Do not have Social/Emotional as their primary need

The Nurture Room- our facilities  The Nurture room has 6 student computers  Apple TV and interactive whiteboard  Bright displays and large working areas  A small library of books ( linked to Accelerated Reader) and a cosy reading corner  Specialised Literacy resources ( LEXIA, SRA, RUTH MISKIN)  A range of Math games and activities

The Nurture Class- Our support  We cater for a maximum of 12 Year 7 and 8 students.  There is 1 designated teacher for English, Maths Literacy, Numeracy and other projects sessions.  Students benefit from tailored PE and Science lessons as a Nurture class.  LSAs support the learning of pupils in the Nurture room and in other practical lessons such as PE dance, Drama, Music.  A Nurture student benefits from a total 23 hours of LSA support in addition to the 17 lessons spent in the Nurture room.  Students are part of a Form group with their peers, and attend practical lessons with their form.  Students in the NG receive regular input from SALT and EP.  The NG leader works closely with internal and external support for children requiring additional intervention ( CAMHS, CP, in house counselling, Medical, Lambeth SEN, Mary Sheridan)  Regular communication with parents and carers.

You would be choosing a class which:  Adds value  Cares about each individual student  Has the highest of expectations  Empowers pupils  Enables pupils to be reflective and confident  Offers a unique learning experience By choosing the Nurture Group
