The Pilgrims were English and they had a different religion to the King of England.

King James 1 was a very religous King. He practised the religion: “Church of England”

James 1 said that everybody in England had to believe in his religion. BUT….the Pilgrims wanted to practise their religion freely.

It is now called Massachusetts The Pilgrims left Plymouth in a boat. The journey was hard and there was not much food, it lasted for 66 days They landed in America and named their town Plymouth Rock. The Pilgrim’s journey from England to America

Everything was different at Plymouth Rock. The Pilgrims did not know how to live in America: They needed to wear different clothes. Grow different food. Build different houses. Watch out for scary animals

The Pilgrims met Squanto, an Indian who spoke English. Squanto was captured by English explorers in He was taught English so he could be a translater.

Quick Question: Why could Squanto speak English? 1.He studied English at University 2.He listened to his teachers in school. 3.He was taught by English explorers.

The Pilgrims were not ready for the first winter in Plymouth Rock It was very cold. The Pilgrims did not have enough food.

Quick Question: What do you think happened to the Pilgrims? 1.They went back to England. 2.It was easy, they had central heating. 3.Some died because they didn´t have any food.

The Pilgrims survived because Squanto and his Indian tribe, (the Wampanoag) helped the Pilgrims find, grow and cook food.

Squanto taught the Pilgrims how to grow more food by fertilising their crops. To Fertilise- Fertilezar Squanto showed the Pilgrims where to catch fish.

Years passed and the Pilgrims were able to farm the land and produce enough food. Without Squanto’s help the Pilgrims might not have lived.

Quick Question: How did Squanto help the Pilgrims? 1.He told them where the nearest supermarket was. 2.He taught them how to grow food. 3.He took them to MacDonalds.

The First Thanksgiving In Autumn 1621 the Pilgrims had their first succesful Harvest. They had collected enough food for the winter.

To celebrate the successful Harvest, the Pilgrims invited the Wampanoag tribe to share their food. They did not eat one meal, but many meals and the celebration lasted for a week.

In between meals the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag children played games together. The adults had sport competitions. There was also a lot of singing and dancing.
