Measurement Must have a standard. A standard is an exact quantity people agree to use for comparison. A standard means two people using the same object.

The Metric System of Measurement: Meters, Liters & Kilograms

Metric System

Metric Prefixes Kilo- means 1000 of that unit Kilo- means 1000 of that unit – 1 kilometer (km) = 1000 meters (m) Centi- means 1/100 of that unit Centi- means 1/100 of that unit – 1 meter (m) = 100 centimeters (cm) – 1 dollar = 100 cents Milli- means 1/1000 of that unit Milli- means 1/1000 of that unit – 1 Liter (L) = 1000 milliliters (mL)

These prefixes and basic units can form the 12 measurements: KILOMETERMETERCENTIMETERMILLIMETER KILOLITERLITERCENTILITERMILLILITER KILOGRAMGRAMCENTIGRAMMILLIGRAM BIG SMALL BASIC UNIT

Measuring Distance: The Meter Distance is how far apart objects are. A meter is 1/10,000,000th the distance from the north pole to the equator. – 1 meter = 100 centimeters = 1000 millimeters – 1 kilometer = 1000 meters = 0.6 miles

Measuring Volume: The Liter Volume is the amount of space an object takes up. A liter is 10 cm x 10 cm x 10 cm (1000 cm cubed). – 1 liter = 1000 cubic centimers = 1000 milliliters. – A liter is a little more than one quart. Volume is 3d so it is difficult to estimate.

Measuring Mass: The Kilogram Mass is the measure of how much matter is in an object. Weight is a measure of the pull of gravity. If you take a liter and fill it with pure water, the mass of the water is one kilogram. The French used water because it is the most common substance on the face of the earth. – one cubic centimeter of water (one milliliter) has the mass of one gram.

Determine what these units used for:  Meter  Milliliter  Kilometer  Kilogram Complete:  1000 mL = ______ L  1m = ____ cm = _____mm  1000g = ____ kg Checking for understanding

Measuring with metric rulers

How to Calibrate a Ruler 1.Find two numbered lines on the ruler and subtract their values. 2.Count the number of spaces that separate them. 3.To calibrate simply divide #1 by #2.

Simple rules of measuring with rulers When measuring, always read an instrument out to where the last digit you record is an estimate and all the digits before it are knowns.

What is the length of the pencil? 9cm 9.3 cm 9.30 cm

Measuring: Distance - 1 dimensional 2.81 cm

3.63 cm 3.63 cm x 3.63 cm = 13.2 cm 2

1.70 cm ( 1.7cm is not correct, it has no estimate) 1.70 cm ( 1.7cm is not correct, it has no estimate) 1.70cm x 1.70cm x 1.70cm = 4.91 cm 3
