Reporting 3 Reporting periods: -Progress Report -2 Report Cards Reporting on Learning Skills and Subject Areas

 Mr. Koren = Religion, Math, Language, Drama, Dance, Social Studies  Mrs. DeVries = Gym, Health and Science  Mrs. Jachrya = Visual Art and Music

Religion & Fully Alive  Theme: Who is God?

Language Reading  Students are assessed in class according to board benchmark assessments.  Helps determine an independent reading level.  Daily at home reading is essential in your child's success in becoming a proficient reader (Snuggle Up, Shared Reading, Teachyourmonster and Raz- Kids).  Strategies learned at school can be extended while reading at home. How you as a parent can assist your child:  Daily Reading! See brochuer  When reading: make prediction, picture walks, decoding words, retell the story  Ask your child questions at the end of the story to check understanding.  Point to the words as they read a text

Language Continued  It is a self-selected text (not leveled to your child's independent level)  You do not need to return the book on a daily basis.  Use strategies to help your child read and decode new words.  Discuss: Character, events, setting, problem and solution).  Interactive at home reading program.  Students are provided with leveled texts and on some levels there are quizzes to assess understanding.  It reports back to the teacher to help monitor your child`s progress.  You as parents can send your child messages encouraging them and their online reading.  * We are working on relaunching it for the new school year.  Snuggle Up & Read  Teach your monster to read  Raz-Kids Program  Teach Your Monster to Read is completely free to play on desktop and laptop computers.  Teach Your Monster to Read is a series of games which help children to learn the key first stages of reading.  Each game covers a different part of the reading journey, and are designed for children at different reading levels.

Language Continued Word Study  5 weekly words, weekly word family (letter sound focus) along with the homework.  1 monthly “super test” – Child will be retested on the previous weeks within the month plus their newest words of the week including current and previous word families.  New words will be written in your child's agenda every Monday.  Please review throughout the week.  Phonics, Vowel Sounds, Word Families and Making Words activities. Writing  Goal: generate, gather and organize ideas and information.  Write for intended audience and purpose.  Forms: List writing, retell, letter writing and journal writing. -By the end of the year they should be able to write a sentence describing their ideas with as many details as possible. -For instance: I went to the park. (that is not sufficient enough). -I went to the park with my mom and dad and we played on the swings and slides. I loved it because it made me really happy to spend time with them. (Level 4 = A) -- They need to be mindful of their audience, their grammar, punctuation and details. -- This is why the grade 1 teachers teach their students early how to spell the word because.

Language Continued Oral Communication Ability to effectively communicate. - organizes and expresses ideas orally with considerable clarity and logic. They are encouraged to use appropriate volume when sharing ideas in a group setting. - The ability to listen effectively in order to understand and respond appropriately. Media Literacy  Understand a variety of media texts and how these forms attract a specific audience.

Mathematics Parent latters are sent home at the beginning of all units outlining what you can do with your child at home to help assist in his/her learning along with expectations. Term 1  Number Sense & Numeration  Geometry and Special Sense  Patterning and Algebra *current focus*  Data Management Term 2  Number Sense & Numeration  Geometry  Patterning and Algebra  Data Management  Measurement

Home/ School Communication & House Keeping Items:  As mentioned, I believe in open communication with the parents of my students because I firmly believe we are a team. I send home weekly news letters (Mr. Koren Monday Morning Memos), I update my portal as much as I can with information for you (such as this presentation) and I am always open to having a meeting or a phone call to discuss your child’s education.  Please ensure that you sign your child's agenda every night ensuring that you have seen their agenda.  Field Trips: Springridge Farms and possibly two more to follow.
