CHAPTER 5 A Journey to Utah

Mormons: A religious group organized by Joseph Smith.

Persecution: Causing people to suffer because of their beliefs.

PERSECUTION

Exterminate: To get rid of completely; to wipe out. Governor Boggs of Missouri said that all the Mormons must move or be killed.

Zion: A gathering place for people who want to live in peace. The promised land.

Martyr: A person who suffers persecution or death because of religion or beliefs.

JOSEPH SMITH

Communal: A system of common ownership. Everyone shares what they have with one another.

Brigham Young: He led the Mormon pioneers west to Utah.

Winter Quarters: A temporary community of log cabins in Nebraska.
