Basic Vocabulary Math is a language, learn the words!

“Statement” A meaningful assertion that is either true or false. x + 3 = 5 The most common “statement” is an equation.

“Expression” A name or a symbol for a number 4 x + 3 3x + 4y - 2 Do you see an equal sign in an expression?

“Equivalent Equation” An equation that means the same thing as the first equation. thing as the first equation. x = 2 2x = 4

Your turn: What is it? a. Statement b.Equation c.expression – 1 = 6 2. x + 2y 3. ax + by = c 4. x + y = 10

“Terms” The individual numbers in an expression or an equation. 4 x + 3 3x + 4y term 2 terms 3 terms “Monomial” “Binomial” “Trinomial”

“Variable” A letter or symbol that takes A letter or symbol that takes the place of a number. x + 3 = 5 ‘x’ is the variable What number does ‘x’ represent? 3x + 4y = 12 ‘x’ and ‘y’ are the variables What numbers do ‘x’ and ‘y’ represent?

“Coefficient” 3x + 4y - 2 The number in front of a variable in an expression or an equation. 3 is the coefficient of ‘x’ 4 is the coefficient of ‘y’

“Constant” 3x + 4y - 2 A term in an expression or an equation that does not contain a variable that does not contain a variable 2 is a constant (it’s “constantly” 2) 2x + 3 = 5 Both 3 and 5 are constants

Your Turn: 2x + 5y List the coefficients 6. List the variables 7. Is this an expression or an equation? 8. List the constants 9. What type of “nomial” is this? (mon-, bi-, tri-)

“Sum” “Sum” The answer when you add two or more numbers together = 5 “Addends” The numbers that are added together to get the sum. together to get the sum.

“Factors” The numbers that are multiplied together to get the answer. 2 x 3 = 6 “Product” The answer when factors Are multiplied together.

“Quotient” The answer when one number is divided by another number. 6÷ 3 = 2 “Dividend” The number that is being divided. “Divisor” The number that divides the dividend.

Your turn 10. What is this called? 11. What is this called? 12. What is this called?

Your turn: Name the circled item = * 3 = * 8 = = 5

“Identity Element” for Addition The number that you can add to any number and have a sum that equals the original addend. (5 + 0 = 5) It sounds like “zero” to me!

“Identity Element” for Multiplication The number that you can multiply to any number and have a product that equals the original factor. (5 x 1 = 5) It sounds like “one” to me!

“Additive Inverse” The number that you can add to an addend to get zero as the sum. 5 + (-5) = (-5) = 0 Think of the additive inverse of a number as the “opposite” or “negative” of the number. What is the additive inverse of -22?

“Multiplicative Inverse” The number that you can multiply a factor by to get one as the product. We also call this the “reciprocal” of a number. What is the multiplicative inverse of -1/7?

Your turn: 17. What is the additive identity element for the number “2 + x” ? element for the number “2 + x” ? 18. What number do we add to “2 + x” to turn it into a “x” ? turn it into a “x” ?

Your turn: 19. What is the mulitiplicative identity element for the number “x” ? element for the number “x” ? 20. What number do we multiply “3” by to change it into a “1” ? to change it into a “1” ? 21. What number do we mulitiply “5y” by to change it into a “y” ? by to change it into a “y” ?
