A View into a Foundation Kate Keller, Sr. Program Officer The Health Foundation of Greater Cincinnati

Why SBHCs?  Logical approach to improving access to health care  Studies show that they improve health and have cost savings  A good investment  Foundations can’t be sole source of funding

Where is the Money?  Find Foundations with interests in health, education or children Grantmakers in Health Council on Foundations State Grantmaker Groups  National Assembly on School-Based Health Care/Center for Health and Health Care in Schools List Serve

Make Your Case  Good Case Statement (IU Fundraising School)  Include a complete financial plan/analysis  Strong Collaboration  Site Visit  Parents and students

Foundation Culture  Build relationships for the long-term  Trust goes both ways  Funders don’t typically “pitch” each other  Funders do talk to each other  Advocacy funding can be a challenge, but worth it for sustainability  View your funders as partners

 Learn funding cycles  Follow application instructions carefully  Good communication is greatly appreciated  Develop a strong enough relationship to admit failure, as well as successes Foundation Culture
