Chanelle Planteen SPED 611: Advanced Methods and Strategies for Students with Mild/Moderate Disabilities Dr. Lysandra Cook University of Hawaii at Manoa Teaching Highlights

Strategies Graphic Organizers- Idea Light Bulb and One Paragraph Outline Vocabulary Instruction-Word Wall Non-Reciprocal Peer Tutoring- Just in Time Game

Graphic Organizers Idea Light BulbOne Paragraph Outline

Graphic Organizers Approach: Idea Light Bulb and One Paragraph Outline Students are given a prior knowledge topic to write about. Students go through the steps sequentially to produce a paragraph. The strategy is used 2-3 times a week as a journal entry. 4 step graphic organizer strategy: 1. Jot down ideas on Idea Light Bulb 2. Fill in One Paragraph Outline 3. Get Outline Feedback from Teacher 4. Write paragraph

Graphic Organizers Utilization: Used PowerPoint Presentation to explain strategy to students during direct instruction. Made paper copies of Graphic Organizers for students. Overall- low cost and easy to implement. Effect on Student Learning: Students were able to independently write a paragraph. Students were able to practice strategy often. Students were able to transfer this strategy to other classes.

Vocabulary Instruction Word WallWord Wall Sheet

Vocabulary Instruction Approach: Word Wall One content-specific vocabulary word is introduced each week. Each day students fill out a section of their Word Wall Sheets pertaining to the weekly word. The words are displayed on a board in the classroom. Day 1- Introduction of term and definition Day 2- Sentence Day 3- Word Art Day 4- Synonym and Antonym Day 5- Level of Understanding

Vocabulary Instruction Utilization: Need area to display in classroom Need copies to disperse to students Need dictionaries Need paper to display words Effect on Student Learning: Students get prolonged exposure to the word. Several approaches are used to convey meaning. Students gain a good understanding of content specific vocabulary words.

Non-Reciprocal Peer Tutoring Just In Time GameDirections and Tally Sheet

Non-Reciprocal Peer Tutoring Approach: Just In Time Game Students are divided into groups containing 3-4 students. Students follow game directions practicing how to tell time on analog clocks to the quarter hour, nearest five minutes, and to the minute. One student is assigned as the game leader (peer tutor) for each group. The game leader decides if student answers are correct or incorrect and teaches students how to get the correct answer if wrong.

Non-Reciprocal Peer Tutoring Utilization: Construction of board game consumed some resources, time, and money. Implementation was easy for students to learn. Effect on Student Learning: Students learned roles and directions easily. Game effectively addressed student needs and provided many opportunities to practice telling time in an age appropriate manner. Students found the game fun and engaging.

Summary All strategies were relatively low cost and easy to implement. Graphic Organizers proved to be a necessary strategy in order for students to independently write paragraphs. Vocabulary Instruction increased the students’ comprehension of the material being learned and allowed students prolonged exposure of the terms through the visual display of the Word Wall. Non-Reciprocal Peer Tutoring allowed the needs of all students to be met in one activity which students found fun and engaging.

Thank you for your attention. The End.
