Grand Canyon National Park Megan Healy

Natural Area The Grand Canyon is to be considered a desert biome. The climate of the Grand Canyon varies widely due to different elevations. – The South Rim has an elevation of 7,000 which means snow in the winter and cool nights, even in the summer. – The inner canyon has a river running through it, this area can reach 120° F

Natural Area Cont. – The North Rim is 8,000 feet above sea level, and gets snow year round. – Weather in the spring and fall is very unpredictable. – The North Rim is closed in the winter.

Wildlife Since the Grand Canyon elevation varies so much there is a wide variety in wildlife. – There are many different kinds of birds, reptiles, and insects.

California Condor Bald Eagle Mountain Lion Black Widow Elk Chuckwalla Lizard

Why should we preserve it? The Grand Canyon is one of the seven natural wonders of the world, we should be doing everything possible to preserve this park. There is not other place in the world like the Grand Canyon.

Park Threats Air pollution: – Air pollution is the main threat to the Grand Canyon. Visitation: – In the 1900’s the park had a mere 49,000 visitors, but these days the park will host 4 million visitors annually.

Conservation Efforts The air pollution is one of the cleanest in the U.S. but still the haze that covers the Canyon is increasing rapidly from near by cities. Progress was made when a signing between the Grand Canyon Trust and the owners of the Navajo Generating Station was settled, this reduced sulfur emissions by 90 percent.
