In-Text Parenthetical Citations and Works Cited Pages Made Simple? Disclaimer: This is my attempt to put it in “plain English” for you. If this contradicts or Confuses anything your LA teacher Says about your paper, you should Use HIM/HER as your best source!

Why do you need to cite your sources? To give credit where credit is due To avoid plagiarizing To credit whatever you quote (write down) from the source. (Doesn’t have to be literally a“quote”, like looking up a google quote) To avoid failing To avoid being fired? It’s the right thing to do!

Citation Styles Vary We use MLA (Modern Language Association) See your paper for what’s included. APA (Used mostly in science areas) Chicago/Turabian (Lesser known format) No matter what….You should use the format the GRADING TEACHER asks for! Even within each, there can be variations.

You should get the information for a citation when researching On your PPT slide! Put citation at top, and notes on slide under

Clinton, Hillary. “Seniors and Social Security.” Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton: New York. United States Government Web. 2 November On your PPT slide! Put citation at top, and notes on slide under Notes: Hillary Clinton, the Secretary of States, says that to be economically sound, we must get all people back to work. Education is a big part of this. Example

A Web Citation includes this info: Clinton, Hillary. “Seniors and Social Security.” Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton: New York. United States Government Web. 2 November *authors’ name. *“The title of the websection or article in quotes”. *The main webpage (homepage) in italics. *organization that sponsors it. *copyright year. *WEB. (yes, just that word, web). *The date you accessed it in international dateline form. *URL in <>

IN HS: The difference between a Works Cited Page and a Bibliography A Works Cited page is a list of sources cited in your paper (in-text parenthetical citation) If it is not cited in your paper it should not be on your Works Cited page A Bibliography is a list of all the sources you used to do your research- whether they are cited in your paper or not For NOW: If you used the info on a note card, even if it didn’t make the final cut, you might cite it.

Some teachers require a Bibliography AND a Works Cited page

Your “Works Cited” really has two parts: 2. The full credit citation on the last page of your paper. 1. The quote you use in the body of your paper, followed by the author’s name (or title if no author) and page in parenthesis (Ness 23) And they complement Each other

Example

Citing a Book Ness, Immanuel. Encyclopedia of Interest Groups and Lobbyists in the United States. Armonk, N.Y. : ME Sharpe Publisher, Print. A Direct Quote The roles of the National Chicken Council are many and varied, they have evolved over time from chicken promotion and consumer education to much more, “…the realization quickly grew to that many of the industry’s primary issues involving inspection, packaging, sanitation, health, and worker safety had to be addressed in the political arena” (Ness 234). Quote in your paper: How you cite it on the Works Cited page.

Parenthetical Citation Typically you cite author’s last name, however, that’s not always available! If not, cite the first thing listed in the citation. For example, if this is the citation: “Federal Court Strikes Down National Security Letter Provision of Patriot Act.” American Civil Liberties Union. 6 September Web. 2 November What would you cite within your paper?

(“Federal Court”). The very first thing listed in your citation is what is included in your parenthetical citation Author is the first thing you would cite, if there is no author…title is next Since a title is “quoted” in your citation, it is “quoted” in your parenthetical citation as well The period goes outside the parenthesis!!!!!! How about…?

Page Numbers in “In-text PC” When citing the internet you rarely have page numbers…therefore they will not be part of your parenthetical citation However, when citing a book you must include the page number in the citation

Example of a Parenthetical Citation Sample Citation for A Works Cited page: Clinton, Hillary. “Seniors and Social Security.” Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton: New York. United States Government Web. 2 November Sample parenthetical citation (paraphrased) One of the biggest issues facing senior citizens today is the problem of mental health issues. By the year 2030 there will be an estimated 15 million senior citizens with mental health concerns (Clinton). Or cite it in text Hillary Clinton, in an article titled “Seniors and Social Security,” wrote…

Tips It’s Works Cited not Work Cited, not Work Citied, not Works Sited) No Author, but long Title? No need to write the whole title out for the in-text parenthetical…just include enough so that the reader knows to which source you are referring. (“Activists”). Put citations in ABC order by the first item listed. Don’t forget to hang the indent…and double space You Cannot use wikipedia
