POETRY DEVICES

IMAGERY What is Imagery? Imagery is a vivid description of things seen, heard, tasted or touched.

STANZAS What are stanzas? Stanzas are the groups of lines in a poem.

REFRAIN What is a refrain? A refrain is a group of words repeated at key intervals in poetry. Ex: Purring, purring Quiet and still. Purring, purring Content from his fill.

RHYME SCHEME What is rhyme scheme? Rhyme scheme is the pattern of rhyming lines. (ABAB, ABBA) Example: The people along the sand. (A) All turn and look one way. (B) They turn their back on the land. (A) They look at the sea all day. (B)

SOUND DEVICES Assonance is the repetition of vowel sounds. Ex: Twinkling twilight meets twice at the edge of the night. (Long “I”) Consonance is the repetition of consonant sounds. Ex: Norm, the worm, took the garden by a storm. Onomatopoeia: Words denoting sounds. (buzz, swish, pop, crackle)

IDIOM What is an idiom? An idiom is an expression that has a different meaning from the literal meaning of its individual words. Ex: It is raining cats and dogs outside.

INFERENCE When you make an inference you are reading between the lines. This is a skill that takes lots of practice and thinking about the text.
