The Japanese Art of Flower Arranging

An American Bouquet vs. Japanese Ikebana

Asymmetrical Form Like nature, Ikebana is asymmetric but balanced

Less is More – Not too many plants

Three levels of plants The emphasis in Ikebana is on the lines of the arrangement. In most forms of Ikebana, three lines are used. They are meant to symbolize heaven, mankind and earth.

Arrange in Silence In Ikebana, silence is observed. It shows an appreciation for nature. It should be a relaxing and contemplative exercise for the person creating the arrangement.

How to make Nageire Style Ikebana

Flower Arranging 1.You should have a tall vase and flowers 2.Arrange the flowers by using tall, medium and short stems to represent the three lines of an Ikebana arrangement 3.Remember: less is more, the look should be asymmetric yet balanced 4.Silence should be observed 5.Take turns arranging the flowers 6.When you are done, follow the “Now What??” instructions.

Now What?? You have completed your arrangement, congratulations! Now complete the following: Draw a picture of your arrangement under your notes. Write a Haiku poem about Ikebana. Remember: a Haiku poem is three lines long with five syllables on the first and third lines and seven syllables on the second. Haiku poems also DON’T rhyme.
