Do you think it’s possible for an entire house to be lifted off the ground? YesNo

Correct! That’s amazing, isn’t it? Let’s learn more!!

Oops! It actually is possible! Let’s learn how!

Tornadoes… …are funnels of air that spin and cause wind up to 250 miles per hour! o These high-speed winds make it possible for entire houses to be lifted off the ground! To return to the list of disasters, click here! Want to keep learning? Click me to continue!

Tornadoes cause high winds, rain, and the sky gets extremely dark, or sometimes turns green!

“How do tornadoes form?” When warm, humid air meets with cool, dry air, tornadoes begin to form.

What should you do if a tornado happens in your area? Hmmm… Let’s find out! To return to the list of disasters, click here! Back

Stay inside, or get inside! Go in the basement or to the lowest floor! Find a room without windows! Click me to learn more! To return to the list of disasters, click here!

Did you know that tornadoes usually happen in the and ? and are the most common tornado months Now that we’ve learned about tornadoes, let’s learn about a different natural disaster! Click the star!

Hurricane Video! Click on the video to begin! To return to the list of disasters, click here!

Hurricanes …are just like tornadoes, they have winds that spin quickly in circles too! What’s the difference? Click Stormy and he will tell you! To return to the list of disasters, click here!

Hurricanes form over oceans. Tornadoes form on land. Keep going! To return to the list of disasters, click here!

Hurricanes can… …cause wind, rain, and waves in the ocean. …can sometimes cause tornadoes. Let’s keep learning ! To return to the list of disasters, click here!

When there is a hurricane, you should… *click on the pink button next to the best answers (there is more than 1 correct answer* Go outside Go inside Go swimming Get in a room with no windows Take a flashlight with you in case the power goes out When you’re done, click here!

OOPS! Hurricanes happen outside. Are you sure this would be a good idea? Back to list

Great Idea! You sure do know how to stay safe! Wow, you’re so smart! Back

Very Good! The strong winds caused by hurricanes can break windows, which can be dangerous! Back

Great! The strong winds and heavy rain can cause the power to go out, so this is a great idea! Back to list Back to list

What is an earthquake? Happens when the giant rocks under ground that form Earth collide with each other and cause seismic waves (which shake the earth) Let’s learn more! Click me to go on! To return to the list of disasters, click here!

Because of the giant rocks moving underground, sometimes earthquakes cause giant cracks in the earth. To return to the list of disasters, click here!

Some Earthquake vocab… Focus: The place underground where the earthquake starts Epicenter: The place above the focus on ground level To return to the list of disasters, click here!

“Did you know that scientists measure how strong earthquakes are using the ‘Richter Scale’?” The scale goes from 0.1 to 10. To return to the list of disasters, click here!

The higher the number on the scale, the worse the earthquake is. There has never been an earthquake that has been a 10 on the scale! Click me to go on! To return to the list of disasters, click here!

FUN FACT! The Richter Scale is named after Charles Richter, who did studies on Earthquakes in the 1930’s. What do I do during an earthquake? To return to the list of disasters, click here!

If you ever experience an earthquake, be sure to… 1.Get to the ground 2.Take cover (under a table or chair) 3.Stay inside! 4.Call for help if you are alone To return to the list of disasters, click here!

Could you imagine experiencing something like this? Click me to continue! Back to list

The giant wave you just saw is called a tsunami. Tsunamis can be caused by earthquakes under the sea. Isn’t that interesting? Continue

Tsunamis are giant waves and can be up to 100 feet tall! Most happen near the Pacific Ocean.

Tsunamis start out as smaller waves far out at see, and as they get closer to shore, they get larger and larger. That’s amazing, isn’t it?

People that live near large bodies of water experience tsunamis. A tsunami usually has more than just 1 wave to come ashore.

This symbol means that a tsunami is possible. When a tsunami is coming, be sure to get to high ground, or the highest floor of a building! Return to list of natural disasters

Let’s see what you already know before we get started! What is a flood? a.Circular Winds b.A type of car A buildup of water after a large rainstorm A B C

Oops! Are we learning about cars today? Let’s try again!! Return to question

Whoops! What did we just learn that circular wind storms are called? Try again! I know you can do it! Return to question

Great job! I’m so proud of you! Now that we know what floods are, let’s learn more about them! NEXT PAGE

Floods can occur After a heavy rainstorm, OR After it has been raining for a long period of time.

Weather channels and radio stations help people know when there is a possible flood in their area, so that they can prepare. How do I prepare for floods? How do people know about floods? After reading both of these, Continue.

To stay safe during a flood… Move to high ground, or the highest floor in your house to try and escape the water! Do NOT attempt to go outside. The water could be deeper than it looks! BACK

There are 2 ways to tell people about flooding. 1.Flood watch- means that a flood could happen. 2.Flood warning- there are actual signs of flooding happening. Back

Let’s Review! Tornado Build-up of water after a storm Hurricane Circular wind storms Earthquake Giant waves that travel to shore Tsunami Circular wind storms that occur near water Flood Giant rocks in the earth move and collide Let’s move on! *click on the symbol of the natural disaster if you want to review more!

“You finished! Now, let’s see how much you remember!” Take the Quiz

1. What should you do during a tornado? A.Go outside Go upstairs Go in the basement A A C C B B

OOPS! How about we try that one again. Remember, tornadoes are outdoors and cause strong winds! Would that really be safe? Back to Question Back to Question

Great Work! With tornadoes, it’s best to be in a basement or a lower floor in a room with no windows! Next Question Next Question

2. True or False? Tornadoes and hurricanes are the same thing. True False Hmm…

I’m sorry, that’s not right. *Remember, tornadoes happen on land, and hurricanes happen near water* Let’s try again! Back to Question Back to Question

Great Job! You’re so smart! Next Question Next Question Hurricanes form on water, but tornadoes form on land!

3. True of False? Tsunamis can be caused by earthquakes. True False

OOPS! The movement of the earth during earthquakes can cause large waves on the ocean. Back to Question Back to Question Let’s try that one again!

Great! The movement of Earth’s surface during earthquakes can cause tsunamis. Next Question Next Question

4. What do scientists use to measure how strong earthquakes are? A A B B C C Ruler Richter Scale Rain gauge

CORRECT! The Richter Scale is used to measure the strength of an earthquake! Way to pay attention! Next Question Next Question

Whoops! REMEMBER: Charles Richter is the scientist that did studies on earthquakes. Back to Question Back to Question

5. Which of these natural disasters does NOT have to do with water? Tsunami Earthquake Hurricane Flood A A B B C C D D

Are you sure about that? Does the movement of Earth’s plates have anything to do with water? Let’s try again! Back to Question Back to Question

Great Job! Earthquakes deal with the rocks underneath Earth’s surface, not water! Next Question Next Question

6. True or False? It is a good idea to go outside during a hurricane. True False

OOPS, let’s try that again! Remember, hurricanes cause very strong winds and heavy rain. I know you can do it! Back to Question Back to Question

Excellent work! It is never a good idea to go outside during a hurricane! You will be much safer inside! Next Question Next Question

7. What can cause a flood? A A B B C C A heavy rainstorm Long rainstorms All of the above

Great job! You must pay very good attention! Both long rainstorms, and heavy rainstorms can cause a buildup of water, or a flood. Next Question Next Question

OOPS! Are you sure that’s the best answer? How about we take another look! Back to Question Back to Question

8. What happens during an earthquake? Last question, you can do it! A The ground shakes Scientists don’t know Giant rocks under Earth’s surface move and collide Both A and C B C D

Hmmm… Are you sure that’s the best answer? Maybe we should try that one again. *Remember, several things happen during an earthquake. Back to Question Back to Question

OOPS! Let’s try that one again! Rocks move, which causes the ground to shake during an earthquake. I know you can do it! Back to Question Back to Question

Way to go! That was a tricky one! During earthquakes, the ground shakes BECAUSE the rocks under the earth’s surface are moving. Continue

BONUS QUESTION What’s my name? A.Marshmallow B.Cloudy Stormy A A B B C C

OOPS! You didn’t get the extra credit. Great job though! My name is Stormy, remember? Done

Awesome Job! You got it! Done

I hope you have enjoyed learning about natural disasters with me! EXIT
