Parts and functions Arm Stage Side clips Ocular lens Coarse adjustment knob Fine adjustment knob Diaphragm Base Objective lens Light source __Hold slide in place __Helps focus on low power __What you look through __Changes amount of light __Supports microscope __Supports slide, moves up and down __Focus on high power __Supports ocular lens, used to carry microscope __Rotate to change magnification __Provides light to see object

Wet mount What is a wet mount? What happens if cover slip is not on correctly? Why does specimen have to be thin? A wet mount is a slide with a specimen in water You will get air bubbles and not be able to see So light can shine through it

Magnification How do you calculate magnification? If the objective lens is 40 and the ocular lens is 10, what is the magnification? If the magnification is larger, do you see more or less of the object? Objective lens power x ocular lens power 40 x 10 = 400 You see less

How images move How do images appear, compared with their normal view? (think of letter e) If you want image to move up, how do you move slide? If you want image to move left, how do you move the slide? Upside down and backward Down Right

How to care for microscope How do you carry the microscope? When it’s time to put the microscope away, what 3 things do you do before putting the cover on? What should you never do when using microscope? One hand on arm, one hand under base 1. remove slide 2. put microscope on low power 3. lower stage to lowest position Never use coarse adjustment on high power
