What is a Noun? Words belong to different groups. These groups are called Parts of Speech. Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives, and Adverbs (to name a few) are all parts of speech. A noun is a person, place, thing, or idea. –The dog, the boy, the planet

What is a Proper Noun? A proper noun is the name of a particular person, place, or thing. Proper nouns always begin with a capital, even if they do not begin the sentence! –Mr. Herrera, United States, California, January, Christmas, The Dodgers, etc.

What is a Pronoun? A pronoun is a word that replaces a noun. Personal pronouns include: I, you, he, she, it, we, you, they. –This way, you don’t have to keep repeating the same noun over and over again. –E.g. His name is Danny and he is happy. –E.g. Jacky likes to play outside. She also likes to ride her bicycle.

What is a Possessive Pronoun? A possessive pronoun shows ownership. The following are possessive pronouns: mine, yours, his, hers, its, ours, theirs –E.g. That’s our ball. –E.g. That game is not ours. That’s actually theirs.

What is an Interrogative Pronoun? An interrogative pronoun is used in a question. They include: who, whom, whose, which, and what. –E.g. Who is there? –E.g. What is that?

What is a Demonstrative Pronoun? A demonstrative pronoun points out persons or things. These include: this, these, that, those –E.g. What are those? –E.g. This is mine and that is yours.

What is an Indefinite Pronoun? Indefinite pronouns do not refer to specific nouns. These include: all, few, none, any, both, each, several, anyone, someone, somebody, everybody, nobody –E.g. Everybody in Room 130 is very smart.
