Learn about additional negative consequences of eating excess sugar (bad sugar)  Diabetes Mellitus I and II  How to avoid diabetes  How to treat diabetes, if you have it LETS GET STARTED COMMANDOS!

Have you heard of Diabetes Mellitus I and II? If so, what does it mean? Do you know of anyone who has diabetes?  How old is the person?  What does it mean for them?

25.8 million people in America have diabetes Every day, they have to be very careful about what they eat. Even having a small piece of cake can be dangerous for them! But why are they so sick?  It is because they have Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes Mellitus are two fancy words that mean your body cannot use sugar properly  Quick review- how do cells use sugar? (Hint: Insulin helps them) o Too much sugar in our body acts just like the snow storms. After it snows, we need street cleaners to clean up all the snow. In our body, Insulin is our street cleaner. o What happens when no one cleans up the snow? There are two types- Type I and Type II

The person is born with it. The body does not have insulin- the street cleaner- to unlock the doors of a cell that needs sugar Why is there no insulin? It is because the person’s pancreas is not working properly.

The person also cannot use the sugar he needs BUT, he is not born with it. So how does the person have diabetes?  Not enough exercise  Eating lots of sugar, especially bad sugar! What did we learn about eating too much sugar?

Watch out for too much sugar! Which foods do you think we should avoid?  Foods with too much of bad sugar can give you energy, but only for some time.  So lets keep our streets clean- our blood- by avoiding such foods EXERCISE!  It is like a sunny day after a snow storm. It is just what our body needs when we eat that piece of cake.  Your body is doing a lot of work anyway. Something as simple as walking takes away all that extra work it does not need
