An adjective describes a noun or a pronoun. An adjective answers: What kind? Which one? How many? Example: happy dog tired boy seven girls

To find an adjective you need to locate the nouns first. Three happy children played at the park. The donkey stepped on my large hat. The child was brave.

Can you find the adjectives? We saw the gray elephant at the zoo. First find the nouns… Then ask, “ What words describe the nouns? ” WHAT KIND? WHICH ONE? HOW MANY?

Special Adjectives: ARTICLES Using a, an, & the. Use a before a singular noun that begins with a consonant sound. Use an before a singular noun that begins with a vowel sound. Use the before all plural nouns and any singular nouns. Tells us “Which one?”

Adjectives after “to be” verbs An adjective can follow the verb it describes. It usually follows the “to be” verb. Ex: The boy is sleepy The boy was six on his last birthday. They are smart. They are eager.

Adjective or Pronoun? Some words can be used as adjectives OR pronouns. They are pronouns when they stand alone (replacing the noun) They are adjectives when they modify a noun or pronoun. Sandy bought some. She likes those. Sandy bought some books. She likes those shoes.

Adjective or Noun? Sometimes we use a noun to describe another noun (so it’s acting as an adj.) The “adjective” noun will always come first. – A race horse is a horse that runs in races. – A horse race is a race for horses. – A boat race is a race for boats. – A love story is a story about love. – A war story is a story about war.

The two dark cats were walking on the fence. – The – modifies the noun “cats” and is an article. Two – modifies the noun “cats” and answers the question “How many?” Dark – modifies the noun “cats” and answers the question “What kind?” The – modifies the noun “fence” and is an article.

The chocolate one is his last cookie. – The – modifies the pronoun “one” and is an article. last – modifies the noun “cookie” and answers the question “Which one?” his – a possessive pronoun that modifies the noun “cookie” and answers the question “Which one?” chocolate – modifies the pronoun “one” and answers the question “What kind?”

Making Comparisons Add –er to most adjectives to compare two things. Add –est to most adjectives to compare more than two things. This elephant is smaller than that one. Elephants are the largest of all land creatures. African elephants are bigger than Indian elephants. Elephants have the biggest ears of all animals.

Comparing with “good” and bad” When you use the adjectives good and bad to compare, you must change their forms. Use better or worse to compare two things. Use best or worst to compare three or more things.

Kelly is a good student. Cheyenne is a better student. Janelle is the best student of all. Jo Jo is having a bad day. George is have a worse day. Al is having the worst day of all.
