IPPOG Update LOG Meeting - 10 November, 2011 CERN L. Mc Carthy

IPPOG Meeting  15 countries  5 LHC Experiments  CERN  Just 3 no-shows (2 due to accidents, 1 no travel budget) 4 & 5 Nov 2

Evolution of IPPOG  IPPOG working groups / IPPOG Associates  Emphasis on “International” (new members: TOTEM, Israel & KEK)  New emphasis on better coordination and communication with others, reaching more audiences, developing nations (?), (need little travel budget) The way we work together… Our geographical scope… What we do together… 3

Core Activities - Update 4

The International Masterclasses 2012  W/Z path for both ATLAS & CMS  ALICE will remain with p- p for now  New (shorter, sweeter) Video Conference  83 institutes already registered for 2012  New countries involved: Croatia, Ireland, New Zealand 6  New Institutes (Annecy Clermont-Ferrand (Fr) & Perugia (It)  Real LHC Data-a big success!

The International Masterclasses The UK Example Most UK HEP groups run annual masterclasses Very popular with schools & students Mostly oversubscribed – demand > supply Only accessible to schools near HEP groups

Masterclasses-Spreading the word UK Pilot project If schools can’t come to the Masterclass… Take the Masterclass to the schools Masterclass Roadshow Taking the complete Masterclass experience to places with no nearby HEP group Lectures by working particle physicists Hands-on LHC data analysis exercise

Two varieties of roadshow Large-scale event at central venue e.g. University, Science Learning Centre… Smaller-scale event at… Individual school Consortium of nearby schools or other local venue

Pilot event- MC Roadshow  Very enthusiastic response from QUB  Meeting existing demand from teachers for greater knowledge of LHC physics  Two visiting lecturers have volunteered  About 100 students (age 16-18) will visit  Public evening lecture and reception to widen reach and increase impact Inaugural event – Queens University Belfast, 13 Jan 2012 Info from Bruce Kennedy, STFC

Next steps Assuming success of Belfast event, Pilot small-scale roadshow Finalise venues and dates for regular series of large and small-scale events Building up a pool of willing volunteer lecturers, so each individual will attend at most 2 or 3 per year “Template” & tips to be shared via IPPOG Database

Website

 Corporate film on International Masterclasses  Based on video from CMS (Matt Ryan et al.)  Length: 3‘30 min  English version now ready & in Outreach Database  Versions with subtitles in other languages can be produced on request  (send ) Masterclasses Video

Reaching New Audiences The Portuguese Example 2009 CERN and UNESCO begin trying to promote CERN in non-member states LIP pilot project CERN Portuguese Teachers Program allow for teachers from non- member states to participate in the teacher program started w/ Brazil (10), added Mozambique (5) 2010 Name changed to CERN Teacher’s Program in Portuguese

Reaching New Audiences The Portuguese Example 2010 Growing…Brazil (20), Mozambique (4), Cape Verde(1), São Tomé(1) 2011 Record of 73 teachers in 2011 Portugal (41) Brazil (20) Mozambique (4) Angola(4) Cape Verde (1) São Tomé(1) Guine-Bissau(1) East-Timor(1)

Core Activities - Update Some Challenges to current system 16  Lack of “reporting” capability  No thumbnails  No automatic file conversion  Storage limit prohibitive  No way to see how many hits  No way to link contact person’s info with entries  Interface not very attractive The IPPOG Database

Core Activities - Update 17 The IPPOG Database Proposed Solutions  Migrate to CERN’s CDS (many features available!)  Build new IPPOG Website, create new on-line interface

Netzwerk Teilchenwelt = Network Particle World A German Network on Particle Physics education and outreach funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research –

1. From the international idea to a national network International idea once a year, interested students come to universities  in Germany about 1.100/year; mostly the very interested students National Network:  using the existing structures of IMC  Offering physics experience throughout the year  Adressing the not-yet-interested students at school (physics teaching in german schools is referred to as an „old subject of old men“)  Empowerment for self-organized science projects  Projects for teachers/trainers: for lasting effects you need the teachers!!

Local Organisation 22 institutes in „Netzwerk Teilchenwelt 19 Institutes International Masterlasses 8 Institutes teachers day 15 Institutes astroparticle physics = almost all particle physics institutes in Germany  around 140 scientists involved !

Upcoming public event in Germany: 23rd November„Tag der Weltmaschine“ 16 german institutes public talks, science slams, student video contest award for „Netzwerk Teilchenwelt“ in the campaign „Germany land of ideas“

Coordination & Synergies 26 Joint session with EPPCN Shared information on what each other are doing Discussed need to support each other in our efforts Will continue this conversation (WG?, in-country contacts?) Concrete example: Brussels 2013 To coincide with new “European Strategy for PP” document Target decision makers & important press IPPOG could help EPPCN via WG?

IPPOG Presence at International Conferences 27 ESOF 2012 – Euro Science Open Forum (July 11-15, Dublin, Ireland) 90-minute session + supplementary program IPPOG proposal in ICHEP International Conference on High Energy Physics (July 1-6, Melbourne, Australia) Contacting organizers WCPE 2012 – World Conference on Physics Education (July 4-11, Istanbul, Turkey) Is CERN going? Some Ideas

IPPOG Update THANK YOU!
