Start of GE:  In 1890, Thomas Edison founded the Edison General Electric Company.  During the same time Thomson- Houston Company, led by Charles A. Coffin, emerged as a competitor.

Facts  1896, GE was one of 12 companies listed on Dow Jones Industrial Average, but now it’s the only original company listed on the index.  GE sold its 49% stake in NBC Universal for $16.7 billion to Comcast.  With this money GE will buy back $10 billion worth of stock.
