LIGHT The 8 th 8 th Wonder of the World

Light is a FORM OF ENERGY called ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION

Electromagnetic Radiation comes in many forms… Radio waves Radio waves X-rays X-rays Microwaves Microwaves LIGHT is the part that we can see LIGHT is the part that we can see (like the colors in a rainbow)

Light is the fastest moving form of energy. The speed of light is about 186,000 miles per second. Light from the sun takes about 8 minutes to reach the earth.

Light will travel in a perfectly straight line until something blocks or

Light seems to be colorless, but it is really a mixture of colors. These colors are absorbed differently by various objects. An orange lets orange bounce off it and soaks up the other colors so that the orange looks orange.

Things like: Cameras Lasers Telescopes CD Players Your Eyes And many, many more things… Depend upon the use of light

Light can be controlled in three basic ways… It can be blocked. It can be reflected. It can be bent.

A Prism will split white light into all the colors of the rainbow. Sunlight passing through raindrops will also divide the light into its component colors.

The band of rainbow colors is called the spectrum of light. Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo Violet

Laser A laser is a special source of light of only one pure color (or wavelength.) A laser can be sharply focused without spreading out very much. This beam of light contains enough energy to cut through thick metal or make tiny, precise incisions. Among other things, lasers are used to read CD’s and create holograms.

Light is very useful to us. It enables us to see. It moves fast and can carry information. It is used in lasers, cameras, and even solar cells. In the past, present, and future… Light plays an enormous part in our lives.
