Project Updates Maine Quality Forum Advisory Council June 14, 2013

Validation of CLABSI Data GOAL: Conduct an independent validation of hospital reported of Central line associated blood stream infections DHA has contracted with JSI, nonprofit public health management consultant Reviews to be conducted in June-July Protocol used for validation is based on recently released federal CDC toolkit for validation of CLABSI.

Status On-Site Reviews MMC, CMMC, EMMC, MGMC, Mercy and St. Mary’s. Hospitals have been contacted; date set Hospital infection preventionist asked to submit all positive blood cultures from the lab for 2012.

Status Remote Reviews TAMC, MidCoast, PenBay, SMMC, St. Joseph’s, and York hospitals Infection Preventionist to work with JSI reviewers to collect necessary information.

Patient Experience Matters GOAL: Collect and publicly report patient experience survey data about primary care and specialty care practices in Maine Voluntary participation Subsidies provided to participating practice sites Standard national survey administered by designated vendors Survey results available on public website

Status 281 practice sites voluntarily participated; represents nearly 1/3 of Maine physicians Completed surveys due to National CAHPS Database on June 21, 2013 One month delay in when survey results will be available to DHA; now estimated to be August 2013 Public website expected in September 2013

Public Website Competitive bid to identify qualified vendors to help design website. Four bids received Wowza awarded contract: – Experience with National CAHPS Database – Experience with public reporting of patient experience survey data – Have developed similar websites to what is envisioned for Maine

Next Steps Verify final survey count by practice site Obtain physician list by practice site for search function Convert mock-up to final site design Use dummy survey data to develop site functionality Prepare contextual information for site

Culture of Safety Survey Goal: Provide medical offices with the tools and resources to assess and improve the culture of their practices to promote quality and patient safety. Voluntary Use of nationally recognized survey tool that measures medical office staff perceptions about openness of communication, office processes, learning from mistakes, emphasis on quality, etc.

Approach Technical assistance to practices on how to administer the survey to all office staff. Survey data entered into secure central database for analysis. Each practice site sent their confidential results electronically Provide toolkit of resources for practices to use when reviewing survey results and preparing action plans.

Status Invitational mailing sent to practices in May. Three webinars held to build awareness about initiative. 50 practices to participate in first wave of project, representing 350 providers and about 1000 staff. Rolling recruitment to continue through Fall.
