MONDAY - PREVIEW SENTENCES Copy the words onto your own paper. Use context clues to determine part of speech and definition for each word. 1.There was something sinister about the man lurking in the dark parking lot, so we asked a security officer to accompany us to our car. 2.The aliens planned to abduct all the intelligent life forms from their planet and take them back to Mars. 3.The hospital quarantined the infected patients from the general population to keep the disease from spreading. 4.Janet is so glad that she is immune to chicken pox and will not have to suffer like her little brother. 5.Many diseases have vaccines that cure or treat them; however, there are still many diseases that we are unable to treat with a vaccine. Sinister Abduct Quarantined Immune Vaccine

VOCABULARY—TUESDAY 1.sinister (adj) – threatening or foreshadowing evil, harm, or trouble. Etymology: late Middle English from Latin word sinistra which meant “left hand side” but was also used to describe “unlucky” or “evil” Example: There was something sinister about the man lurking in the dark parking lot, so we asked a security officer to accompany us to our car.

VOCABULARY—TUESDAY 2.abduct – (verb) to seize or take someone away from a place by force Etymology: Latin 1.The aliens planned to abduct all the intelligent life forms from their planet and take them back to Mars.

VOCABULARY—TUESDAY 3.quarantine (verb)-to isolate from others; to detain or keep from (standard time is 40 days) Etymology: Latin Example: The hospital quarantined the infected patients from the general population to keep the disease from spreading.

VOCABULARY—TUESDAY 4.immune – (adjective) protected from disease naturally or by vaccination or inoculation Etymology: Middle English from Latin Janet is so glad that she is immune to chicken pox and will not have to suffer like her little brother.

VOCABULARY—TUESDAY 5.vaccine – (noun) substance that stimulates cells in the immune system to recognize and attack disease-causing agents Etymology: French Example: Many diseases have vaccines that cure or treat them; however, there are still many diseases that we are unable to treat with a vaccine.

CONNECTIONS Complete the following vocabulary connections on your paper. You may work with your partner. quarantine connection: create an illustration with a caption. vaccine connection: create an analogy using this word. EXAMPLE: automobile : gasoline :: television : electricity sinister connection: Create a T-chart. On the left side, list things that would be sinister. On the right side, list things that are the opposite of sinister. (people, animals, movies, scenarios, etc.) abduct connection: Write an original sentence using the word abduct with clear context clues. immune connection: Use your phone or computer to look up the origin of immune. Write an explanation of where this word came from and how we have made it work for today’s language. This will probably take Wednesday and Thursday.

CONNECTION Connections help us learn vocabulary words! Good illustrations are NOT stick figures. Think of something beyond stick figures with speech bubbles. Connections on next slide! I am a BAD example of an illustration for a vocab word. Can you guess what vocab word from week 4 this represents?? That’s a great illustration!

1. 2. Vocab – 20 minutes Create a Frayer model for the 3 words that you didn’t illustrate.

WEEK 7 VOCAB QUIZ Write a paragraph using all 5 words. You do not have to use the words in any particular order. 1. sinister 2. abduct 3. quarantine 4. immune 5. vaccine Each word must be underlined and spelled correctly. The meaning of the word must be clear in the context of the sentence(s) around the word. Don’t change the part of speech of the word by adding suffixes. You may conjugate verbs, however. If our definition included more than one part of speech (noun or verb, for example), then you may choose either for your paragraph.
