Fighting Disease Think pair share What is a disease? Use an example to help you answer.

Learning outcomes Describe how the body prevents infection List the main microbial causes of infection Describe how the immune system fights infection.

Diseases A disease is something that stops our body from working normally (often it makes us feel ill as well) When we have a disease caused by microbes or micro-organisms (germs) we have an infection.

Why don’t we get ill more often? The first line of defence. On your outline of the human body, label Where germs enter and how we stop the getting into our bodies. Here is an example for you. Ear wax traps them Germs enter through ear

Watch this Make notes in the back of your book while you watch. cience/organisms_behaviour_health/disea se/activity.shtml

Task Use your notes from the video and what you have already learned to answer this question. Write a paragraph explaining the many ways in which your body prevents or fights infection. (in your own words)

Mark your partner’s work. Use the mark scheme on the next slide and write a comment on what they could do to make their answer better.

How many of these things did you include in your answer? The skin is a barrier. The blood clots to stops microbes entering Tears contain antiseptic. Sweat kills microbes Mucus is sticky. The stomach contains acid. Ciliated cells can move mucus away from lungs. White blood cells make antibodies or engulf (eat up) microbes.
