Top 5: Greenest Buildings in New York City Antonio Marchitelli

Go Green!  “Go Green” has become the mantra of many of the world’s leading organizations, especially throughout New York City  Many companies are constructing their administrative buildings and facilities with green materials  “Go Green” has become the mantra of many of the world’s leading organizations, especially throughout New York City  Many companies are constructing their administrative buildings and facilities with green materials

 On average, a NYC inhabitant uses about half the electricity than a San Franciscan  The Bloomberg Administration has created organizations to control the construction of new buildings and the maintenance of existing ones  On average, a NYC inhabitant uses about half the electricity than a San Franciscan  The Bloomberg Administration has created organizations to control the construction of new buildings and the maintenance of existing ones

Background Information  I researched over twenty buildings (residential, office, industrial, etc) in New York City  Each has been recognized with a LEED accreditation or an Energy Star label  I researched over twenty buildings (residential, office, industrial, etc) in New York City  Each has been recognized with a LEED accreditation or an Energy Star label

Criteria 1.The creativity and ingenuity of the organization in utilizing new innovative green strategies  Light sensitive windows, recycled construction materials, grey water systems, etc 2.The type of building  My basis for judging an apartment complex is different than an industrial factory 3.The organization’s commitment and dedication to maintain and continue their environmental efforts 1.The creativity and ingenuity of the organization in utilizing new innovative green strategies  Light sensitive windows, recycled construction materials, grey water systems, etc 2.The type of building  My basis for judging an apartment complex is different than an industrial factory 3.The organization’s commitment and dedication to maintain and continue their environmental efforts

# 5: MTA’s Stillwell Avenue Terminal Coney Island (Brookyln)

 Terminal receives about 50,000 visitors each week  Renovated in late 2001, it was constructed by 85% of the recycled debris from the old terminal (about two million pounds of steel)  70,000 square foot glass roof, consisting of 2,730 solar panels  These panels will help generate about 250,000 kilowatt hours/year of renewable energy to be used by the station  Terminal receives about 50,000 visitors each week  Renovated in late 2001, it was constructed by 85% of the recycled debris from the old terminal (about two million pounds of steel)  70,000 square foot glass roof, consisting of 2,730 solar panels  These panels will help generate about 250,000 kilowatt hours/year of renewable energy to be used by the station

The Stillwell Avenue Terminal set competitive standards of how major transportation hubs, such as airports and shipping docks, can become energy efficient

# 4: The Solaire Tower 20 River Terrace (Manhattan)

 27-story building and the first residential tower to receive a LEED certification (Gold- level)  Solar panels and an air-conditioning system that utilize natural gas, consuming 35% less energy than its counterparts  Constructed of highly recycled content and has an irrigation system that waters the rooftop ’ s natural garden  Highly sophisticated ventilation systems that supply filtered fresh air to each residential unit, lowering pollution levels and asthmatic related ailments  27-story building and the first residential tower to receive a LEED certification (Gold- level)  Solar panels and an air-conditioning system that utilize natural gas, consuming 35% less energy than its counterparts  Constructed of highly recycled content and has an irrigation system that waters the rooftop ’ s natural garden  Highly sophisticated ventilation systems that supply filtered fresh air to each residential unit, lowering pollution levels and asthmatic related ailments

The Solaire demonstrates the new innovations that residential buildings can adopt to lower energy consumption reduce pollution

# 3: The New York Times Building 620 Eighth Avenue (Manhattan)

 Cuts heat load by 30% and energy costs by 13%  The exterior is lined with ceramic rods that help control the internal temperature and the sunlight that enters the building  Contains automatically adjusting window shades that are sensitive to the changes in sunlight  Automatically closes during the sun ’ s peak hours  Cuts heat load by 30% and energy costs by 13%  The exterior is lined with ceramic rods that help control the internal temperature and the sunlight that enters the building  Contains automatically adjusting window shades that are sensitive to the changes in sunlight  Automatically closes during the sun ’ s peak hours

This 52-story building cost over $1 billion to build, the majority being used research and employ new green innovations

# 2: Queens Botanical Garden Visitor Center Main Street (Queens)

 The Visitor Center was the first building in New York City to receive platinum rating by the USGBC in 2007  Solar panels line the roof to capture the sun ’ s energy, providing about 20% of the building ’ s electricity  Through channels in the roof, rainwater is collected and it used in the center ’ s toilet system, where only 3 ounces of water is consumed per flush  The Visitor Center was the first building in New York City to receive platinum rating by the USGBC in 2007  Solar panels line the roof to capture the sun ’ s energy, providing about 20% of the building ’ s electricity  Through channels in the roof, rainwater is collected and it used in the center ’ s toilet system, where only 3 ounces of water is consumed per flush

Being the first of its kind, the Visitor Center set the tone for all of New York ’ s buildings, ensuring that most energy efficient initiatives are being employed

#1: The Bank of America Tower 100 W 44th Street (Manhattan) Will be completed in May 2009

 Will be the United States' first LEED platinum- certified green skyscraper  Huge blocks of ice will be manufactured at night when power draw off the energy grid is low, then air will be run over them during the day in lieu of air conditioners  Each work station will have its own thermostat, instead of having one for the whole floor  Will contain two plumbing systems, one for drinking water and the other for grey water  A Grey water system captures rainwater in tanks on the roof and uses it for the septic system and to water plants  Will be the United States' first LEED platinum- certified green skyscraper  Huge blocks of ice will be manufactured at night when power draw off the energy grid is low, then air will be run over them during the day in lieu of air conditioners  Each work station will have its own thermostat, instead of having one for the whole floor  Will contain two plumbing systems, one for drinking water and the other for grey water  A Grey water system captures rainwater in tanks on the roof and uses it for the septic system and to water plants

 These incredible innovations will help decrease Bank of America ’ s energy bill by over 40%  This building is a true testament to the long- term effects that going green can have, both environmentally and financially  These incredible innovations will help decrease Bank of America ’ s energy bill by over 40%  This building is a true testament to the long- term effects that going green can have, both environmentally and financially

The $2.1 billion skyscraper will be the second tallest building in New York City

GO GREEN AND STAY GREEN NYC!  Each of the five buildings mark the different green methods that can be used  Each and every building has the potential to be energy efficient, and it is pivotal that all measures are taken to protect our planet  As of July 2008, there are 24 LEED certified buildings in NYC and over 240 LEED projects are underway  Each of the five buildings mark the different green methods that can be used  Each and every building has the potential to be energy efficient, and it is pivotal that all measures are taken to protect our planet  As of July 2008, there are 24 LEED certified buildings in NYC and over 240 LEED projects are underway
