What is the Monroe Doctrine? 1823; USA interested in Western Hemisphere and European nations must not interfere with them USA did not have power to back it up Still, policy used to send troops to Mexico (to intimidate the French) and to buy Alaska

What does Manifest Destiny mean? The belief that it was the USA’s destiny to own ALL of the North American continent Took land by any price

What about stuff we made? USA produced too many goods than we could consume Led USA to look for markets to sell abroad

What was Europe doing? European countries already “carved up” Africa and a lot of Asia into colonies USA looked for its own places to colonize
