Your have chosen to become a veterinarian! Training and education requirements: Although veterinary education requirements don't strictly dictate that a person must have a bachelor degree before entering a doctorate program in veterinary medicine, all applicants do have to complete some pre veterinary course requirements. Requirements range from 45 to 90 semester hours at an accredited college or university. In order to gain admittance to an accredited program of veterinary medicine, students must submit test scores from the Graduate Record Exam, the Veterinary University Admission Test or the Medical university Admission Test.

To become a full licensed veterinarian it usually takes 8 years. Four years in university plus four years in a veterinary medicine school. A very important part of becoming a veterinarian is getting into veterinary school. The pre-veterinary curriculum is heavily science oriented so math and science courses in high school should be emphasized in course selection. In university it is necessary to take the required courses for the veterinary schools that you wish to apply to. Outside of the required courses it is still important to get good grades, so take courses that you are enthusiastic about because it is easier to study for them and do well in them.

All practicing veterinarians must have a doctorate degree in the field. Courses in the four-year program cover inorganic chemistry, biochemistry, general biology, animal biology, animal nutrition, zoology and more. Internships are becoming more and more common for aspiring veterinarians who have just graduated with a doctorate degree in veterinary medicine. Generally lasting for a period of one year, the internships provide a small salary in addition to clinical experience. It is required that practicing veterinarians obtain licensure. Individuals must have a doctorate degree in veterinary medicine and must pass the Veterinary Licensing Exam to gain the necessary credential.

Salaries: Veterinarians who are employees at private practices probably average around $105,000 per year in salary right now, with starting salaries of less than $75,000 per year. Information about the career: A usual day of a veterinarian starts with reviewing the records of the pets scheduled to come in that day. Most of the dogs and cats that they see on a daily basis are there for pet exams or health care maintenance. They check their teeth to see if they need to be cleaned, look at their eyes to make sure they are OK, check for ear diseases, listen to their heart and lungs, feel their abdomen to make sure are no changes, such as a tumor, and check their skin for signs of disease.

It is often necessary to do lab work to figure out what diseases are present, so vets have to be proficient at running lab machines and interpreting laboratory values. X-rays are commonly taken, so vets are radiologists, too. They have to discuss a pet's problems with its owner, so public relations are an important part of the job, too. Finally, vets are all small businessmen or businesswomen. They have to make enough money to support their families and to provide adequate equipment and inventory to provide for their patients. You have chosen to become a chef! Training and education requirements: Chefs are responsible for preparing many dishes which are of high quality, day after day and night after night, and within cost. The duties of Chefs are to plan the menu, determine the price and how much it will cost to make the dish. They order supplies, hire cooks and other kitchen workers and supervise the preparation of food. But being a chef not only means that you have to be able to cook good dishes, it also means that you have to be creative in serving those dishes.

Chefs, cooks, and food preparing worker work primarily outside, in restaurants or, sometimes, in their own company. Chefs or cooks have to have at least finished high school. Chefs also have the more difficult cooking duties, prepare the specialties of the restaurant, and develop their own recipes. Large hotels, clubs and restaurant chains hire an Executive Chef who coordinates planning, budgeting and the purchases for all the food operations. Cooks and Chefs are on their feet throughout their work day, and during mealtimes must work under pressure. They face such hazards as cuts and burns, and may be exposed to oily mists, dusts, fumes, and smoke.

Certain personal attributes are important for executive chefs to possess. These include the ability to work quickly and efficiently, a well-developed sense of taste and smell, good personal hygiene, and a willingness to work with a team. Familiarity with a foreign language may also prove useful in communicating with other workers. To become a chef it takes about 1 to 3 years to meet all requirements. Salaries: A chef or cooks salary ranges from $30,000 to $70,000 per year, depending on where you work and what type of chef or cook you are. Back to start

You have chosen to be a pediatrician! Education and training requirements: A pediatrician is a doctor or nurse that specifically works with children about 15 years and younger. Becoming a pediatrician includes long years of being in school, including 4 years of university, 4 years of medical school and at least three years of an internship and residency. The debt that many medical students build up to get through school. Depending on whether you go to a public or private medical school, you might pay from $44,500 to $69,500 a year, and you will likely end up with an average of about $168,000 in debt.

High School is where it really begins. You need to study Basic Sciences (biology, chemistry, physics, algebra, geometry, calculus if possible). Humanities (English, a foreign language) Get involved in high school charity organizations, and extracurricular programs like student government, music programs, and sports. Plan to get into the best 4-year university your grades allow. The better (and thus the harder) the more likely you are to get into medical school.

Pediatric careers can be general or specialist. General pediatricians treat most children hospitalized with acute illness. They may also care for children with special needs, such as learning difficulties. Outside hospitals, they may work in local clinics or schools. Specialist pediatricians focus on as many different clinical areas as can exist in adult medicine. They are frequently involved in research projects and providing guidelines for preventative health education. Salaries: The average starting salary for primary care pediatricians is about $241,000 and up to $278,000 after three years. Back to start
