PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT, HEALTH & PHYSICAL EDUCATION Advocating it’s importance in classrooms

The Importance of PDHPE PDHPE is an important and unique subject in the education landscape because it focuses on equipping the student with the necessary knowledge and skills in an overt and clear way to become a productive and constructive member of the community that they live in. This achieved through both physical education and personal development and health lessons.

Personal Development & Health  Content strands such as growth and development, safe living, interpersonal relationships and personal health choices aim to expose and provide students with a deep sense of who they are and how they fit in to the society in which they live.  Students emotional intelligence (EQ) is enhanced through controlled interactions with peers.  Students also learn to make informed choices when it comes to personal safety and health, such as choosing to eat the right foods and avoiding unhealthy choices and peer pressure.

Physical Education  Physical activity is important in contributing to quality of life. It improves cardiovascular efficiency and facilitates efforts to reduce obesity and heart disease.  Organised group games and activities are enjoyable, and can be a creative and social outlet that has the potential to build a child’s self esteem.  Participating and being apart of a group can lead to the positive socialisation of a child whereby they learn both the written and unwritten rules of social interaction.

Food for Thought  What other curriculum area can offer the following?  Encouraging growth of good values  Communication skills  Interpersonal relationships  Problem-solving skills  Decision-making skills  Improved health (physical, mental, socio-emotional)  Motor development  Self efficacy
